+Isaac Gleeth (Midnight Legend) People can enjoy something as much as they want and have their personal preferences. However, if they are going to write serious reviews and assessments, they should have a more analytic, neutral, and distanced attitude and look at how the film handles its elements based on their aesthetic experiences. There are critics who can enjoy something out of personal preference, but still give it a bad aesthetic judgement. Most audiences don't seem to know about this difference

and you think the audience are any better? They only judge based on personal preferences and only mention the story and/or the acting, and their "reviews" are just a summary of statements; almost nothing is reasoned or have arguments

jay bee Taste is subjective yes, but the opinions from other people creates a norm or tradition for what makes a good or bad movie for the general audience. Critics don't judge movies solely on their personal preferences, they base it on these norms and traditions or criterias for that specific type of movie (how well the movie accomplishes this is subjective, but you would expect that the critics have enough experience, training, "refined" taste, and common sense to give reasonable judgements)

jay bee Then you disagree with human nature. Explain to me then why there is often a person in the comments section who says a movie sucks and then there are lots of replies from people who all say something like "What are you talking about? The movie is great!". Or that there are several people who ask "Why do people praise this movie so much?". Doesn't this imply that they ask what the norm and tradition are? If everything was relative and all opinions should be treated as equals, then there would be nothing to discuss. But we still have disagreements, and it has often been several people with the same opinion who bash on people with the opposite opinion and claim that they don't have good taste. Saying that critics "don't know crap" also implies that they don't operate in the tradition of what makes a movie good or bad (even though I would say that it's the audience who mostly do not do that)

jay bee No, you cannot prove me wrong, because taste is not something that can be disputed. There is no truth or false in normative statements. And in all honesty, refusing to explain is just a sign that you are backing out

check out "Critically acclaimed movies that bombed at the box-office"

better than IMDB anyway; the users there don't know what the word "review" means

believe me, there is a huge difference between audience's reactions and the critics' reactions to movies: Audience: "the movie was awesome and totally got my attention, and it was so epic!" Critics: "The movie contains an atmosphere that pleases the viewers, and it is combined with strong acting performances and good use of its cinematic elements" Audiences like/dislike movies because they mostly do not bother to be analytic and go in-depth or speak on behalf of their target audience. I definitely go for the critics' opinion over the audience's any day

There is a difference between liking a movie and giving it an aesthetic judgement. I can like a movie based on personal preferences, but when I have a neutral and distanced attitude towards it, I will sense its formal qualities more and then have a different kind of opinion on it For example, I can like and enjoy the "Friday the 13th" movies because I am fan of horror films, but when I'm basing my opinions on the criterias for a good horror film, my verdict is that they are not good movies

yes, but there is also a standard of taste

boingokky They don't dictate, they lead us to the norm and principles of what is considered to be good or bad for the general public. It's a philosophy from the 1700's where it was believed that only a select few of ideal critics with certain qualities to them could sense and feel the "beauty" and aesthetics in pieces of art, and therefore act as guides to find a standard and agreement over what is considered to be of good taste. WatchMojo mostly base their lists on critical reviews and the general response. Of course, the critics and audiences nowadays have such different attitudes and experiences that it has become a lot more difficult to find "harmony"

boingokky The movies did well in terms of box-office. And whether you like to admit it or not, there are standards and norms for what we consider to be good or bad; when we bring out or opinions and judgements, there is always a consensus that sums up what will be pleasing to the average viewers, and we often seek those qualities in other movies. If you also take a look in the comments section of WatchMojo videos, there will always be someone who gets pelted with replies from several other users who claim that he/she doesn't have good taste. You can say that several ideal movie critics come together and give their own subjective aesthetic judgements. And even though it seems like they sense different aspects of the same object and give different judgements, there is a joint verdict and common praise/criticism that create a norm for what makes that type of movie good or bad If you compare the movies on the list with the general response from critics, you will see that they mostly match

yes, because there is a huge difference between the critics' and audience's opinions. I am definitely trying to be a part of the former
