If South Vietnam survived or even better, conquered North Vietnam as well as safeguarding itself, then the country would be liberal and democratic like Taiwan and South Korea. North Vietnam and Viet Cong were bad guys, very sad that people seem to respect them. They are no different from Germans in WW2

Limited scandals like Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay are limited to terrorists and murderers, people who weren’t innocent civilians. There’s no moral equivalence between US and Russia.

  16. QemeH Ok, where is the proof that Europe has lost trust in the US? There is no evidence of a major shakeup in foreign policy. NATO is still the dominant force and the US with their military are still the unquestioned world leader. Little has changed in the big picture, which educated people appreciate.

US started the Iraq War with noble intentions, and spent billions of dollars to help Iraqis, and placed US servicemen in the line of duty to protect Iraqi civilians. Most of the Iraqis who died, died as a result of sectarian violence and genocide, which the US had no hand in. Russia is starting a war for no good reason, and is morally indefensible. That you can’t understand this is disturbing.

  24.  @motubak1622  The New York Times say only 780 known terrorists have been held in Gitmo since it became a prison around 2002. And CNN says Abu Ghraib held a maximum of 3800 convicted terrorists/criminals, most of whom were not involved in the scandal. So US held at most, a few thousand suspected terrorists and abused some of them. Is that good? Maybe not, but considering their links to terror, I don’t think it’s that bad. US also did a lot of good for Iraq, some groups like Iraqi Kurds were and remain very grateful for the US invasion of Iraq. US did all it could to block the genocides, they were partially successful, especially in Iraqi Kurdistan. Overall the evidence is clear US is a force for good. You say the prisoners were defending their country? The same way Germans were defending their country in WW2? You assume that they had a good reason to be fighting US. But you’re wrong. By fighting the US in Iraq, they were fighting against democracy and human rights. The Iraqi Insurgents are wrong and horrible. And so are the Baathists. They shouldn’t have fought back. They should’ve surrendered and let the US help them as it did in Iraqi Kurdistan. Being friends with the US is much better than being an enemy for no reason. Compared to Russia, which kills people for selfish reasons, US is morally superior.

  26.  @smilo_don  none of those incidents were ordered or tolerated by the US military. Individual soldiers who broke the law don’t speak for the entire US. In WWII a few thousand British and American troops committed crimes ranging up to murder, but it makes no sense to say that because individual British troops murdered a few civilians, that the entire British army is collectively guilty. Same here.

Anyways Baathist Iraq is like Germany in WWII, it is morally bad and deserved to be invaded. US was morally justified to invade. Russia has no moral justification to invade Ukraine. And what proof do you have Iraq is worse off now? Iraqi Kurdistan is better. The Brookings Institute published a report saying “Southern Iraq is a safe place”.

  38.  @motubak1622  I have done research, the Brookings Institute says Southern Iraq is safe, NGO reports say the US has improved Iraq, especially in Iraqi Kurdistan. Even anti-war sources like Iraq War Body Count acknowledge that any dead Iraqis are mostly from sectarian violence, which does not implicate the US. The fact that you are unable to show proof is telling me you are not educated, and are emotionally invested and unwilling to see any truth which contradicts your identity.

US has helped Iraq by staying in selflessly for decades, giving Iraq billions of dollars, and putting US service members in harm’s way to help Iraqis. Russia doesn’t do anything, it just steals from people and helps groups like the Taliban.
