US also helped the Philippines and Malaysia resist communist/terrorist insurgencies sponsored by China and Soviets. US helped ensure Eastern Europe and Taiwan’s survival against violent expansionism by Soviets/Russia and China. US also helped Israel survive wave of attacks by hostile nations in the Middle East. US is doing quite well, most fronts are winning and the US model of democracy is proven effective by example, democracies are all US allies, and all democracies are better nations than any regime. Locals sometimes are ignorant and brainwashed. If you support the dictatorships like Russia, Taliban, ISIS, or China over the US, you are not logical. US has to deal with lots of stupid people who refuse to see democracy as a good thing, sadly some of these people motivated by nationalism, communism, etc join the Viet Cong, the Taliban, ISIS, etc, and support the cause that hurts others instead of helps everyone.

But as you can see, there’s no winner as House Speaker because the winner needs a certain threshold, not simply a majority. Therefore, the Republicans all know that they can safely vote against their nominee because there’s no risk of the Democratic Party nominee winning, unless some Republicans defect. But defections for a vote this important are unheard of. It’s impossible to imagine any moderate Republicans or Democrats voting for the opposite nominee for House Speaker. For some issues, sure, but for this important role, it is against their most basic principles as a party.

  49. They weren’t abandoned on purpose. The UK and US had no idea that the Afghan government and ANA would collapse so quickly. The hope was that Afghanistan would survive and thus, the pro-US forces would be safe. If the UK and US evacuated every ally, then no Afghan government or military would be left, and the country would collapse even more rapidly to the Taliban
