  1. The Maginot Line did exactly what it was intended to do prevent the Germans from crossing the French German border and go through Belgium. Belgium that knew that they had no chance at stopping the Germans on their own were good with France's plan to fight Germany in Belgium. The problem was that none of the various factions of socialists running the French government trusted their army enough to let them be capable of getting into Belgium in necessary force in time to fight the planned battle. If the socialists hadn't all known that if they had the overwhelming firepower that the necessary army represents they would have used it to take absolute power and thus believed that given the chance the non-authoritarian General Staff would do the same and didn't trust the army enough to let them be capable of doing the job.
