Excellent history, and a history I've not heard much about. -- It seems the US Navy leadership setup their own catastrophe, by reassigning the capable Admiral Kinkaid to other duties and assigning the inexperience Admiral Wright to command the Task Force with little time to prepare for the coming battle. The Japanese had superior torpedoes and a good Admiral Tanaka who brilliantly used the torpedoes to defeat the American task force. The American torpedoes at that time were undependable and ineffective.
