For 1930's aircraft the Savoia-Marchetti SM.79 looks impressive, but as the war progressed the Italians with out the time or resources for up-graded equipment fell behind. The men who flew SM.79 against the odds were brave no doubt! I always appreciate seeing what the Italians come up with, often it's cutting edge stuff, Thanks Bismark.

Italian's and speed is a classic combination.

The Fiat G-55 and Macchi C-205 Veltro, they looked liked thoroughbred race horses. And the others looked good too.
34
A fighter that is not that well known is the Macchi C.205 Veltro, it was equipped with the Daimler-Benz DB 605 engine license built by Fiat, and three 20mm cannons. It was an excellent aircraft.

The US should bring back an updated version of the OV-10 Bronco. The A-10 is special, but it is overkill for fighting most insurgent enemies

I knew the Finns had good success with the Buffalo, and now I know why, they were pilots that had the Right Stuff and the Buffalo did the job for them, which was not the case in the far east fighting the Japanese. Great video, I learned something, thanks Chris.

It amazes and interests me how sophisticated the Germans were in designing and engineering the Ju 87 back in the day, the people who built these war machines were very creative, and this is why we love them.
7
Agreed, maybe Brewster should take some responsibility for not following up with the Buffalo's successor. The state of the art Vought F4U Corsair prototype was flying in 1939.
7
I used to live in Idaho, it's a beautiful state.

The fearless and amazing Hanna Reitsch flying the Fieseler Storch is a great story. To me this plane always looked like nothing else, some what like an insect, a but beautiful and brilliant design.

I think this is an amazing plane. It was "in 1936 a Kurt Tank designed the Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condor to a Deutsche Luft Hansa specification for air transport. The first flight, with Tank as pilot, occurred in July 1937, less than a year after work had begun. The Condor made a famous non-stop flight from Berlin to New York City in 1938,[9] proving the concept of transatlantic air travel.[2] The Condor would later be used as a maritime patrol bomber aircraft of some repute during the war." Wikipedia. It was a useful design first for civilian use and then adapted for military use. --- I always thought the Condor was cutting edge design in it's day, great video and Drachinifel video was a super good supplement video too!

Interesting airplane, that developed and evolved as Germany made it useful for different tasks. Great video Chris.
3
Very well done the video has a great look, you are a true fountain of knowledge, Thanks Bismarck

Never heard this history before, what a failure and fiasco for the US Navy and they covered it up! The 265 heading was bogus, Lieutenant Commander John C Waldron and Torpedo-8 correctly figured where the Japanese fleet was and they mutinied and attacked it, and they all died except for one! Wow. IMO, Waldron and Torpedo-8 were brave men and good soldiers, US Navy leadership screwed up and they won't admit it, this resulting in a great loss of men and planes. The establishment covered up the real history, they're hiding the truth, this is proof they're politics and propaganda going on in the US during WW2. Very interesting history. The military establishment has been and still is very powerful in the US, they have the ability to spin the news to a narrative they approve of.
3
Beautiful plane, IMO, propeller planes do not get much better than this, this being near the peak of their development. Thanks Chris, great review.
3
That's a crazy airplane, it's bad ass for sure, but super dangerous too, Germans and Canadians lost a lot of pilots and planes flying it. It's another Kelly Johnson design, and he designed it for speed. The Italians operated them until 2004, they loved it. In the 1950's It's perhaps the best was a Cold War interceptor, IMO, but IDK? It's a very interesting plane, great video, thank you.
3
Always good videos, thank you Chris and Justine. Do another collaboration again when you get a chance.

No doubt the He-100 is a beautiful plane, interesting German engineering, and logical conclusion of why Bf109 chosen for combat instead of He-100. Great video.
2
I'm sure the MiG-15 and the Saber were inspired by a single engine German jet fighter design of late WW2 era, Bismarck knows. MiG-15 commands respect.
2
Beautiful aircraft
2
A lot of history attached to F-4 Phantom II, Great review.
2
It's interesting to hear what Willy Messerschmitt had to say about this, like you say it's not surprising he didn't think building the He-162 was worth the effort, I think he was right.
2
M.C. 202 asymmetric layout is odd and probably not worth the trouble to design it that way. It does have Italian good looks.
2
I'm sure I'm not the only one to ask, did any one successfully eject out of the He 162?
2
Malta was the unsinkable aircraft carrier for the Allies. It played a big part in the battle for Africa.
2
Reimar Horten was visionary, the wing design was for sure futuristic. Reimar scrounging up whatever to build the 229 is being resourceful and using a tail wheel from a He177 landing gear is ingenuity. But using sawdust, charcoal, and glue to shield from radar, maybe that needs to be proven. The British report calling it a pterodactyl, that's funny. ~ Ho 229 is the best looking plane of WW2, but it needed more time and resources to develop it's design.
2
Good collaboration with you and Justin, thanks for another interesting show.
2
Germany should do as much as they can in Germany working with the Typhoon and the Tornado, until they produce a new homegrown fighter.
2
He-100 brilliant and beautiful, but not the fighter that the Bf-109 was, very interesting video.
2
The VT Fuze was a great British idea and the US spent the time and money to develop it. Good stuff Bismarck, thanks.
2
Interesting jet airplane, it was an evolutionary design development toward later jet designs, excellent history.
2
The USSR would not have had a chance without help from the Allies. During WW2 and lend-lease HOW MANY trucks, locomotives, field guns, ammunition, food, fuel and supplies came from the West? What is the real answer? Not the leftest communist crap. The Soviet Union was propped up by Western aid.
2
The VT Fuze was a great British idea and the US spent the time and money to develop it. Good stuff Bismarck, thanks.

German humor gets our attention.

@rogerdavies6226 , yep

Very excellent video. thank you.

@christophermcguire7888 ~ The Allied nations got sucked into the war by circumstances and maybe Axis nations did too. The real causes for the war were hidden and controlled by powers above the nation level, that were financial and occult, they financed both sides of the war and profited from it.
1
Very good video Chris, I always liked the He-100, it was sleek and fast, where as the Bf-109 was not as sleek and fast, but it was the great War Bird.
1
The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 and The Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condor are two of my all time favorite airplanes. And both were designed Kurt Tank.
1
The Bf 108 is a thing of beauty and a joy forever, "Willy" Messerschmitt was an artist.
1
Good answer!!! that we all needed to know!!!
1
Fantastic history, that has everything to do with what the FW 190 was, a beautiful fighter.
1
What a great interview, the Fighter Mafia produced some great planes.
1
@skelejp9982 ~ Every interview with Hanna Reitsch she's very upbeat positive. She was a little lady, very talented, skilled and nerves of steel.
1
@skelejp9982 ~ I have listened to the same interviews of her, she was a rare person male or female, very few pilots could have lived doing what she what she did, by all rights she should have died young. But thankfully she survived, I think she was a great lady. RIP Hanna.
1
Sounds like Willy was right, Heinkel 162 could have been a lethal fighter, but the logistics for it's production were too weak in 1945.-- To Heinkel's credit, test pilot legend Captain Eric Brown flew the He 162 and said it was a great plane that could have given the Allies big problems, if it had been produced in adequate numbers.
1
Lived to fight another day, good job.
1
Super interesting and a very good analysis of the A-10, history and evolution, much appreciated Chris, thanks.
1
Very interesting history about Focke Wulf and Kurt Tank, this explains why the Fw 190 designed/ built the way it was. Fw 190 looks right and proved to be right, one of the best of WW2.
1
Mass media fails again to get to tell history right, that's no surprise. The German concept of the 262 as fighter/bomber was a good one, kind of a concept that today military planners would have..
