I'm no expert, but after almost 20 years Lockheed Martin should have an airplane by now that was operational and able to perform as specified. In a construction business a company that performed that badly would have been fired and then sued for damages. Apparently Lockheed Martin and the Pentagon are in charge and American debt is their spoils of war. Stealth isn't worth it, when you optimize the plane for stealth you compromise the aerodynamic performance. it would be better to spend the money on stealth detection technology, it will have to be developed anyway and probably already exists, wer'e just not told about it. The Rafale is a great plane and a multi-role fighter, same as the F-35, but the Rafale looks and moves so superior. When everybody figures out how to track and shoot down the F-35, it's game over, it was a waste of time and money. The government will never admit that this 1.5 trillion dollar plane is a dog and not a dog fighter. The fact they are extending the life of the older planes is sad. The military should have had new planes in service 5 years ago.

For Lockheed Martin the F-35 and the F-22 (they will make more) are the geese that lay the jumbo size golden eggs everyday, it's stealth magic. We will never know the truth about stealth from them, because #1 it's Top Secrete, #2 it's proprietary and #3 it's cash flow. Down load and read the Department of Defense, Dr. Michael Gilmore report for fiscal year 2016, about the F-35. It's 62 pages long and lists all the problems with this plane, some have called it a damning report, I have looked at it and it's somewhat technical and will require study. The plane will cost will be more than what we are told, because they have a lot problems to fix and there will be more problems to fix as it's made combat ready, which is suppose to happen in 2 years or could be more depending on which version of F-35. All the fixes will have to be retrofitted to existing planes and that costs more money.

The F-35 has inferior aerodynamics that were compromised to optimize stealth performance. All the other non stealth fighters have superior aerodynamics that were optimized for the all around aerodynamic performance, that includes maneuvering, cruising, carrying ordinance, accelerating, maximum ceiling and etc. The real questions are: is stealth worth it? will it work as advertised? is it to expensive? should we put all our eggs in one basket, because we are not building any other fighters? Stealth planes will be detected by other nations we will be stuck with old fighter planes and worthless F-35 and F-22.

The European's don't believe in "Thrust Vectoring" in a dogfight it destroys kinetic energy, the more energy the fighter has the greater the advantage. If a SU-35 or F-22 in a dog fight used thrust vectoring against the Euro fighter or the Rafale it could get them killed. Thrust Vectoring slows the plane down and makes it an easier target to kill and creates more extra weight and complexity unnecessarily. Thrust vectoring is good for airshows.

Lockheed Martin and the Pentagon are planning on spending for 1.5 trillion dollars (total cost) for the F-35. For that kind of money they can buy all kinds of friends here in the US and all over the world. You trust what they are saying at the USAF Red Flag exercise. It is sponsored by the US Air Force the same people who help create the F-35, of course they are not going say anything bad about this plane. It's interesting that the Rafale was absent from the 2017 Red Flag exercise. The Euro Fighter was there but never pitted against the F-35 in a one on one, if it had been the Germans said they would have made a salad out of it.

French aviation goes all the way back to the genesis of human flight and it's fighter jet heritage goes back to the 1940's. The Rafale is a direct decedent of the Mirage 2000, an excellent plane, it is an evolutionary design based on proven technologies plus new innovated technologies. The French are great innovator's, often the first to develop new technologies and the rest of the world follows.

The advantage stealth fighter has is not because stealth can't be detected and targeted, it can be! The US Navy can already search, track, and target stealth fighters using the Northrop Grumman E-2D Advanced Hawkeye it uses a Lockheed Martin AN/APY-9 UHF-band radar. Sullir I think your are 100% right. It's still the tail wagging the dog, and we are the dog. The owners of the big military defense contractors are the ones in charge of running world (and they are not necessarily Americans or live in here). The question I have is how far out can the US Navy search, track, and target stealth fighters using the Northrop Grumman E-2D Advanced Hawkeye. I don't think the Navy will tell us! Can they lock on a stealth target 200, 300, 400 miles out? Another question is: would the Pentagon build aircraft it could not track and target? I don't think they would. You have great comments, not a fan of stealth, but you are right.

The Concorde, designed in the 1960's, cruised at Mach 2.02 or 1,431 mph with 90 passengers and their luggage and could easily out run an F-35 today. The F-35 just doesn't arouse the excitement as other fighters do, it's a fat ugly toad that needs to kiss a beautiful princess and turn into a handsome knight in shinning amour like a Rafale, Typhoon, or a Gripen and now it's able to blow up the enemy castle and save the damsel in distress and live happily ever after. But maybe the F-35 is the geeky nerd-dy fighter, who wins by stealth and secrete Pentagon weaponry?

Sullir, The Concorde was a fun comparison, 1960's tech, still impressive today and it has never been replaced. Today there are no commercial airliners that fly + Mach 2. Other airliners were more popular because they cost a fraction of what the Concord did, but for those who like Ferrari speed and could afford it the Concorde was the way to go. The whole world wants stealth because the Pentagon is pushing the envelope toward stealth since the 1960's with the SR-71. It's an arms race like the Brits and the Germans building battleships before WW-1. War was a racket then and still is today, it makes money for the rich, but costs the common man, because building up militaries deprives local industries and business the money it needs, it taxes the common man. War is also a used to control population by the rich, in the Western world, especially in America, the people at one time thought government should be controlled by the people themselves, but the reality is the government is now controls the people. War culls the heard and government has less people to manage. The Devil controls the governments of the world and has since Adam and Eve were defeated by being decieved by the serpent. Our military was not the best in the world, but as a nation we were healthy, strong and armed with all kinds of weapons. No other nation on earth would have dared to invade America, because every man was armed and able to defend America. Since then we have fallen, now we are weak and unhealthy have no money, and no industry. But our military spends 587.8 billion this year. If you total the budgets of next 11 nations with highest military budgets it would only come to 580 billion. Whats better have a weak military and a well armed populous that no one would dare attack, or a overwhelming power military that is controlled by devils and wants a one world government run by same devils that run the world today. DARPA stands for Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, its part of the US Department of Defense, it's military, and their budget is close to 600 billion dollars. Last time I looked outside the earth looked flat to me, isn't that proof! I've stood on the beach thousand of times and the ocean is flat and ends at eye level, I've stood on mountain tops a thousands times the horizon is flat and ends at eye level, I've flown hundreds of times the horizon is flat and and ends at eye level. Hundred mile views are not uncommon and none of them show a curve. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse has been seen 40 miles and further out, this is not uncommon. If we lived on a ball earth with a radius 3,959 miles, the Lighthouse (193' high) viewed from 40 miles out would be 1,407' below the horizon. Seeing the Lighthouse would not be possible if we lived on a ball.
