The fuel injector mixes a large amount of air with a small amount of fuel and sprays it into the combustion chamber. The spark plug ignites the fuel vapor (gas) and the pressure from this explosion forces the piston down.

Yes, I've always thought of this as one of the great marvels of mechanical engineering. The electric car, although the future, seems rather boring by comparison.

There is the Wankel rotary engine that was used for years in the Mazda Miata, but there are drawbacks and couldn't replace the piston driven design.

One of the best animations and explanations that I've seen. You could have also shown the less complex OHV aka pushrod engine, it's on the way out, but still significant.

An electro mechanical device known as a distributor would send an electric current at the correct time to each spark plug wire.

@postmodern9208 There is a small hole in each connecting rod where the oil under pressure showers the cylinder walls.

@postmodern9208 On an engine in good condition, no or very little oil should be lost. The pistons contain oil control rings which sweep the oil into small holes in the piston groove and this drains back to the oil pan. The diesel fuel oil is not for lubrication, its a fuel that takes higher compression to ignite. The diesel lubricating oil is similar to regular engine oil, in fact diesel engine oil (not fuel) can be used for lubrication in gasoline cars and motorcycles in many cases. It's normally a heavier weight. For example 5w40 instead of 0w20. Your statement applies to 2 stroke engines where there are no mechanical valves, just ports that exposed by the movement of the piston. The oil level is maintained because it is continually recirculated similar to how the coolant is recirculated. If the piston rings, valve guides, and bearings are good and there are no leaks, you should lose very little oil.
