I assume your level of expertise is equal to that of the people saying it can be done? I assume you level of expertise in risk analysis and management meets things like the DOE orders used at their various nuclear sites? "Lousy way" doesn't mean it WON'T be done.

And, the rebuttals sound like Employment Applications from those hoping to hop on the ever-almost-here Traveling Nuclear Circus payroll. Been there, done that, bailed on it to finally get a legitimate, ethical profession.

@gwentarinokripperinolkjdsf683 I have read the Science report in the copy I get every week. Have you? I worked in the nuclear industry and have had an interest in this for years, including past analysis provided by the Union of Concerned Scientist by experts in the nuclear weapons field. I've got enough of a background to know the particulars of the analysis and/or the bona fides of the experts waving flags. These references are out there, but you have to look for them. Just because this kind of issue is 'inconvenient' is not a valid reason to ignore them.

@jesan733 That kind of thinking is exactly how you end up with yellow-and-magenta tape and yellow plastic fencing off and covering downtown Manhatten. Tell me again how 'lousy' it is to use mantles from Coleman camping equipment to try and build a reactor, and that's why 'nobody' would do it.

@brylozketrzyn Doesn't matter when you have to convert fizzle-spread radioactive material into $$$$$$$$ for cleanup in a site like DC or NYC.

You mean like the $$$$$$ BILLIONS DOE wasted on the never-finished MOX plant? The one even the French were laughing at the American Rubes about, as they took the money to build it??

Thanks for covering this story which would normally get tamped down by the people trying to make a cheap $$$ on this tech. And, sorry, what is your practical experience cleaning up nuclear material, as in even that spread about from a fizzle? The best analysis I've read from the 1990s pretty much ended up with an abandoned Manhattan. I now forget the gentleman's name, but he was an acknowledged expert in the field and worked with the UCS. BTW, that NC professor is just looking to keep his job teaching fools ..., er ..., eager students the guild secrets of nuclear engineering. Just another enrichment boondoggle in the US which the DOE will be left holding the bag on when this all blows over ..., like the previous processes people have tried to use this Left Behind DOE site for ..., piggy-backing on the local dead economy and past risk/safety analysis for the site. A lot like the multi-billions $$$$$$$$$ DOE spent on the recent MOX fuel facility in South Carolina ..., which failed as everything but an anchor to make sure SC doesn't drift out to sea ...
