  1. Because the US couldn't afford to keep replacing all the dead pilots and all the crashed aircraft just from bad design, like in Europe? Especially with carrier landings and launches required for USN operations? Especially when pilots would refuse to fly them BECAUSE of that replacement rate?! The real improvement would have been trashing the playground ROIs that turned it all into a political problem instead of a capabilities problem.
