  2. How many multi-department/organization projects have you been involved with that use software to control an electronic and electro-mechanical devices? Having everything in-house eliminates HUGE problems with coordinating software changes and compatibility among several independent corporations, leaving only the in-house problems, which STILL make life exciting. So, what projects HAVE you been a part of. I am the system engineer for a large computer driven system that controls electronic and electro-mechanical devices in the overall instrument system. it includes the Windows operating system, an industry-specific and customized electronic application, and a PLC driven by that industry-specific application to run the electro-mechanical devices. It all operates under a strict software QA program to control configuration and changes. I can EASILY see why GM wants to keep it all in-house so vendors like Google and Apple don't 'tweak' their systems for other car manufacturers or just decide, by their own metrics, to shut down the house, like Microsoft has done so many times before in certain product lines. My system was developed to run on Windows 7, but when MS decided to stop supporting it, there were NO END of $$$$ I had to spend to keep my installation up and running, in a safe and secure environment. This is they SAME sort of issue that would crop up every 2 to 3 years for Android and every 5 years or so for Apple devices. Or, are you going to be made God of Car OSs and control all of the issues arising from Google and Android 'breaking' cars just because THEY need to 'innovate' to drive upgrades, while the car manufacturers are upset because now they have to support 'outdated' OSs hooks/apis along with the Bigger, Faster, Newer ones that provide little to no value for 95% of drivers? Are you going to be the person who decides who can and can't buy cars based solely on what cell phone they own, maybe tattooing it on their wrist for ease of identification? That's MY anecdote, what is yours?
