As someone involved with system engineering and project management, I find it disturbing that prattling fools like the video's 'adult' presenter are made the face of Real LIfe Technology and Engineering. It's easy to 'imagine' Crayola-grade studies, but INCREDIBLY hard to translate a lot of that into REAL LIFE tech with maintainable systems, operable machinery, and resource management. It all looks like a Barbie the Engineer project, not a middle of a blizzard, stalled engine/freezing carbon capture installation being operated and maintained by people who believe is BIG wrenches and hammers.

I was there when we were all promised a helicopter in every drive way. I was there when we were told nuclear power would make electricity 'Too Cheap to Meter'. I was there when Space Karen promised trains of Cyber Semi Trucks making railroads obsolete. You need to talk to someone with an actual clue.

'Breakthroughs' in any big program, especially gummint funded, come amazingly close to the deadlines for having to find places to trim the gummint's overall budget for any number of truly important, but emergent, problems. I'm glad I'm not ducking the 'helicopters in every driveway' and dodging the shrapnel from the morons flying them who even now don't know what turn signals are for. I'm NOT glad I keep getting fed the same lines on fusion, especially when you get some eye-opening back-of-the-envelope analyses done by people like ThunderFoot, who show the nasty orders of magnitude improvements needed. And, he didn't even begin to address the nasty things like 'how do you feed fuel into one of those confinement fusion plants' or 'how do you get convert the energy to something useful' when there is still the merely 30% recovery fraction for a conventional thermal plant to work with.

Had a professor DECADES ago who admitted to me this was just a smokescreen for keeping the weapons community funded and employed, while he was trying to recruit me for a summer intern position with possible follow-on work even into the Fall term. LLNL was founded on Edward Teller's ego problems and a hugely powerful Bring Home the Pork/Fight the Commies shuck and jive. Weapons stockpile reliability and the like are issues, but there are just as many organizations out there who can do that work ..., just not in the comfortable circumstances of LLNL's 'local clients'. That's especially an issue when you consider LLNL's past history of design screwups and the ability of other facilities to do this work just as well and better because they are not parked in prime real estate with a lot of neighbors.

The basic fact is, there is a targeting pod BECAUSE THE PILOTS ARE INCAPABLE of doing all the steps necessary for accurate targeting IN REAL TIME while flying high performance aircraft, much less doing the designation required. That's why a lot of these aircraft are TWO PEOPLE mounts just to keep up with the rigours of using the equipment, much less doing the math and physics themselves, like fighter-jock-boy insists is normal. Screened and lived around fighter et al. pilots for a while, and they are people with fast reactions and above average 'aggression' who can be trained not to crash expensive equipment TOO MUCH of the time.
