'Breakthroughs' in any big program, especially gummint funded, come amazingly close to the deadlines for having to find places to trim the gummint's overall budget for any number of truly important, but emergent, problems. I'm glad I'm not ducking the 'helicopters in every driveway' and dodging the shrapnel from the morons flying them who even now don't know what turn signals are for. I'm NOT glad I keep getting fed the same lines on fusion, especially when you get some eye-opening back-of-the-envelope analyses done by people like ThunderFoot, who show the nasty orders of magnitude improvements needed. And, he didn't even begin to address the nasty things like 'how do you feed fuel into one of those confinement fusion plants' or 'how do you get convert the energy to something useful' when there is still the merely 30% recovery fraction for a conventional thermal plant to work with.

  2. I want to see the design of the feed mechanism for the Livermore Lab Rube Goldberg system. That and analyses of how to clean up and reset the process when the feed system jams like a radioactive/hazardous material sewing machine at hundreds of time the speed and energy of operation. Livermore does not have an iron clad design history for their really, really IMPORTANT designs, either.
