@TheRealFumigator Considering they represent a path for Progressive Flooding, which is what REALLY sinks ships, yeah, I'll bet they DO have to meet tighter specs than the tubes on a playground? You know, like being metal and needing to pass pressure tests (initial and repeated), like all fittings between compartments, as a starter? Even the Compartment Pressure Testing Fittings have to meet their own Pressure Testing Specs for not allowing Progressive Flooding in an 'incident'.

Talk Tubes: See movie "The Great Race" with Jack Lemon (Professor Fate) and Peter Falk (Max, "Push the Button!" Max) in the Professor's death-submarine, communicating between each other over talk tubes ..., while standing back-to-back to each other!! And, that boy with the answer "Heat!"? He's a civil engineer now so he doesn't have to deal with anything but Mud 101 and Concrete Senior Seminar. And, what Petroski doesn't cover as well are the qualitative issues involved with defining Failure. Means different things to different people and uses.
