  1. Have people here ever worked maintaining any kind of large, complex systems? The tech design is only a faint glimmer of complexity. I have, and this is a project management/risk management debacle, not to mention just the industrial safety questions on routine operations and maintenance. If this ever happens, I don't know that I want to live in the government that 'rules' the enterprise.

Now, imagine a 'space elevator' shredding a cable and leaving the equivalent of all those re-cap tire treads you see littering the US roadways, but in LEO and with those carcasses falling on those below or just infesting the LEO for years. I'm sure the regulatory legal profession would LOVE this project just as much as the Fusion Power Academics love the "Just One More Career Away" practical fusion power plant.

  3. Been involved with design, licensing, construction, startup, operation, maintenance, and management of complex and hazardous facilities just sitting on the ground. That includes safety and risk management in the design, construction, operation, and shut down phases, where violations of government-mandated standards and even LAWS make you and your entire enterprise subject to civil and criminal penalties; civil and criminal penalties broken down to the INDIVIDUAL level. Na'ah, ain't gonna happen. This idea makes multiple facility nuclear power plant all on one site AND IN OUTER SPACE look like a Putt-Putt Miniature Golf Course. Or, have others here been involved with $$$$billion projects covering decades of planning, designing, constructing and starting up together with operation and maintenance for decades involving such a high tech, extremely hazardous facilities that went as planned, without ginourmous cost overruns and maybe not even an actual completion?! See Common Sense Skeptic channel, and then add those PRACTICAL ENGINEERING ISSUES listed above.

BTW, as this is just as much an OPERATIONAL NIGHTMARE as a tech design, the US Chemical Safety Board has a whole slew of videos on some very basic, simple facilities that killed people just cuz Incompetence. Also, see the numerous Deep Water Horizon reports, of which there are at least 4 major ones from the Presidential board (two different reports with differing degrees of detail), the US Chemical Safety Board, AND the US Dept of Interior. The absolute scale of the ENERGY involved in this idea along with the damage and mayhem a failure could wreak is just astounding.

  7. I'm an old jack-of-all-trades facility construction, startup, operation, maintenance, modification, and retirement engineer. I've also had to work with hazardous materials and the required risk management involved at the overall level down to the industrial safety with how to ground equipment to make sure it is energy-safe. The stake through the heart is the project management, risk management, financial management, and regulatory oversight/management. How many airplanes take a crash or two to 'get it right'? Now, imagine that involves a structure that will cause mayhem in Earth orbit and on the ground, involving all the energy, kinetic/potential/electrical/vibrational/invisible pink unicorn, locked up in this system and just looking for a way to leak out!
