here's what could be an awesome plan: basic HTML / CSS: can learn pretty much anywhere (ex codeacademy) , just pick up the basics of HTML tags / CSS attributes but DON'T try to memorize every property / selector. these are more pick-it-up-as-you-go languages, Google is your friend! ( I still google CSS stuff all the time ) basic javascript: can learn anywhere (ex codeacademy), again just pick up the bare bones and then practice on https://www.codewars.com/ - learn by attempting then looking at the solution when you get stuck. intermediate-advanced Javascript: https://bit.ly/2RSnbik https://bit.ly/2PqpyaF React: https://bit.ly/2Plgkwi after this, just practice by building a few of your own apps with create-react-app computer science fundamentals (challenging, though): https://www.edx.org/course/cs50s-introduction-computer-science-harvardx-cs50x

Some extra stuff: - Don't trust a programmer who combs their hair - As some people have pointed out there are ways to achieve a UNIX coding experience in Windows (so it's not a deal breaker) - Another plus for PC: easy to UPGRADE hardware (tried not to be biased I swear 😅) - You may need more RAM if you are running virtual machines or containers (but you can also do this in the cloud)

just to be clear: --> working as a software engineer was the best job I've had and I recommend it to anyone. you are getting paid to learn a valuable skill, and can save a lot. --> keep in mind, the average turnover at these companies is actually just 1-2 years --> do I I still program? yes pretty much every day. except now I can work on whatever :)

Stuff I did not explicitly include 👀 - Java is another very viable back end language w/ Spring as its corresponding common framework - Microsoft Azure is another large cloud computing provider Hope you guys enjoyed it

2020 update: This video was a warning -- bootcamps can be good if you can afford them -- but like college, the ROI is quite bad when the information is free and you retain it better when self-taught. Anyone still determined to go. I would urge anyone to go to a "pay-after-getting-a-job" bootcamp -- this means the bootcamp has "skin in the game" to get you a job -- or they don't get paid. Recently a lot of people have been commenting positively about Lambda school which wasn't around when I went, so that might be one checking out.

I would say https://www.levels.fyi/ is the best place to get detailed salary info for tech companies!

Hey! Thanks for checking out my video. Answering comments: 1. "It seems lonely" The video seems that way, since I didn't want to film people at the work space, or the friend I was walking with. Also, this day I preferred to read at lunch and watch YouTube at night, but other days I'll get lunch with people and go out at night. So maybe I'll have to make another one for the weekend. 2. "You didn't work 8 hours" Yeah, you can get a lot done without office bullshit (looking at you meetings, and slack notifications) 3. << Comment about my cooking >> Yes, I am working on it, lol.

Thanks for adding - I'm glad these workarounds exist - another thing I didn't mention: the ease of upgrading PC hardware is not to be overlooked, this combined with cost savings makes windows an even stronger choice.

@projectDominic sorry just saw this, yeah I think that's a great topic

true that - windows hardware is also easy to upgrade - so gives flexibility in that regard

nice addition thank you. in some cases will still need virtualenv package to create envs with a specific versions of python this can be done the -p flag pointing to your executable
18
I apologize about the audio on my end -- I was also in a hotel room for this interview -- I'm only speaking for a small part of the time so hope it's not too disturbing.

San Francisco rent man.
18
mine's not gonna start with "algo" and also be differnet in a few other ways (;
18
keep in mind this is just a week day, I'm surrounded by people at the work cafe, and my 1h+ walk was with a friend who I did not film (;
17
Cheers
17
sure! there are still interesting technical challenges, and in many cases you will have a designer / style guide given to you. front end is also easier when you are starting out because you can see the things you are building
16
I see how the video gave that impression, but I'm surrounded by people at the work cafe, and went walking with a friend who I didn't film. Also this is a week day so it's not every day (:

setInterval is being called with 2 arguments: setInterval(callback, time). it's known as an asynchronous function (an intermediate aspect of javascript), which means it is running "in the background" of the rest of our code. after we call setInterval ,the return value from calling it (which is just a number) gets stored in the variable called interval, that value can then be passed as an argument to clearInterval to stop that running function, in this case when we reach the number 100. hope that helps!

@andrewspetaci1671 I started coding July (full time in Sept) and got a job in April - so 8-10 months depending on how you measure it
