The USA is already extremely punitive and has nothing but a ~76% recidivism rate and the world's largest prison population to show for it. Maybe take a leaf out of Norway's book.

@reedwright301 you don't know that he was looking to take someone else's life if he didn't get what he demanded, it could have been empty for all you know.

@reedwright301 how do you know he committed other crimes? and that he was influencing younger people? you are making unsubstantiated claims. And you have yet to respond to the fact that in the video I linked below of the Norwegian prison the 1st person they interview was charged for armed robbery. They have 21% recidivism rate In Norway.

@reedwright301 To believe it was his first armed robbery is called looking at the available information. Do you have any information to back that he did more? Secondly to try to take into account jail time for the amount of people he influenced to commit crimes is not possible and even if it was, that could be passed up from him, if he was influenced by someone else to to influence others? Thirdly you bring up some good points Norway does have a higher literacy rate than the USA and racial tensions are deinfinitely not as much of a problem and yes they don't have as many guns around 31 per 100 people in comparison to the USA's mind boggling 121 per 100 people, but these are all problems that could be tackled and have an actual influence on crime not more punitive prison sentences. Also as a side note the UK has lower literacy rates amongst their younger population than the US and arguably equal or more racial tension currently than the US but their gun ownership is about 5 per 100 and both their incarceration rates and recidivism rates are much lower than that of the U.S.
