@emilwandel as an older person you can get this kind of injury from hitting your head on your kitchen cupboard or something really minor. it is very common.

@Baccatube79 yeah, i cant believe someone is traveling without making sure to have health insurance. that seems completely absurd to me. its not that expensive.

it is typical for this kind of hematoma to develop over a bunch of weeks in her age group. it bleeds very slowly from very small veins that break easily for older people and it takes weeks to accumulate enough blood to cause issues. if it reaches the amount we saw here, it makes sense to operate asap to keep it from causing more severe damage. it is irresponsible of those american doctors to choose money over somebody's health. i am shocked, but not surprised.

i think your parents were very lucky with the hospital here in germany just putting the absolute minimum onto the bill. there was no ct, mri or anesthesia listed. i have worked in neurosurgery in the past and the bills for privately insured patients here were much much higher. just saying this, so people don't expect pricing like that if they come from other countries.
