Anyone in nightsoil and urine collection, slaughterhouses, butchers and tanneries, were burakumin. Even today, if you are getting married, you can hire a detective to investigate your potential partner's family tree to ensure there was no one from the burakumin community, as they were considered unclean. This resulted in the burakumin becoming inbred and having birth defects.
