  2.  @GethDestroyer  yes but calories isnt the only aspect of health. Foods cooked in different oils have different levels of nutrition. A burger with lettuce in it provides significantly more nutrients than that same burger without lettuce yet they cost the same price and have equal (almost) calories

  5. because a sudden, untreatable virus outbreak with a much higher deathrate than the flu can easily overwhelm the healthcare system and make deaths from all sources far more likely. Smoking on the other hand is a somewhat consistent source of death that can be accounted for easily

  6.  @Hybred  Nicotine is barely harmful unless you have a heart condition, cancer, or still have a very undeveloped brain. Nicotine is genuinely one of the least harmful things in cigarettes its just the main cause for addiction

The only products ive heard of that contain nicotine are tobacco, vapes and snuss pouches (other than methods for quitting cigarettes).   13.  @Mark2756042  Where i live smoking taxes have nothing to do with healthcare costs, despite healthcare being universal and public, its solely to try and prevent people from smoking (and no it didnt work even slightly in case you were wondering because my countries government has no idea how addiction works).

  23.  @kobe4184  By that logic no one can defend gasoline powered cars, because it affects those around you in the exact same way. Personal liberties should be maintained, and unless the effect on others is directly measurable and significant there should be no additional cost for simply indulging in such liberties. You shouldnt be smoking inside around other people unless theyve given consent, but im pretty sure where i live its illegal to smoke in enclosed spaces with people who dont have the ability to consent (i.e children). Staining your houses walls and your clothes doesnt affect anyone other than you, and no people having to put up with you smelling bad is not 'affecting' them.

Im not addicted to smoking cigarettes, there is literally just no point in banning them because like most drugs banning them will cause more harm than good. I was able to get tobacco when i was under age, ive been able to get basically any hard drug if I wanted it, people can grow their own tobacco, ive seen kilograms of illegally purchased tobacco leaf. As long as what youre doing is not directly, measurably, significantly hurting other people, outlawing it is nonsensical.

And yes you do need to mention that before the last sentence because otherwise youre just saying two complete opposites back to back and expecting people to understand what you mean.
