Yes. I think he believed that out of control of her dad she will feel better. And didn't understand that only medication that she was taking under her will kept her in +- good condition. Of course she stopped taking it with him and became aggressive, willing for sex with anyone, not only with him, start drinking and taking drugs. And he couldn't do anything with that. But it 's his fault anyway. Now Britney is in big danger because of her mental ilness and without control and medication. He should take care of it, she needed medication and psychotherapy permanently.

Maybe he didn't. When she was under control she had to take medication.under her will. And when she became free she stopped taking it and became very aggressive and started to cheat with every guy. So Sam could not stand it and couldn't do anything. Maybe he believed that when she will be free and with him alone she will be better than before. But it was impossible. So he wanted compensation because he couldn't live with her and because their divorce anyhow was bad for his reputation. So he could get money at least. Her family knew what to do to keep her +- stable and he didn't.
