You mean the same 'mighty' British Empire that managed to conquer a quarter of the Earth's surface and hold on to most of that for over two centuries? THAT British Empire? The same empire that took on two rival empires at once with the same technology level, and with greater numbers, in a proper pitched naval battle just a couple of decades later, and WON? yeah that empire was pretty damn mighty mate, you do realise that no foreign power has succeeded in conquering this little group of islands in over 900 years and that this same little group of islands has taken on every other major power in the world in war and won at least once, INCLUDING the US the next time they tried anything in 1812 (I call trying to invade Canada, getting sent packing AND getting your White House burned down in the process losing)
8
@joecoin well we didn't push it did we, regardless of not being a major power back then you were aided by other nations who were, were clearly GOING to become one yourselves before long and so yes, we BOTH eventually decided if you can't beat them join them, and we DID, we've been fighting side-by-side ever since, and I think that worked out pretty well for all concerned don't you? except for those we fought against together that is
4
@David Siitherism where the hell do you get the idea we 'abandoned' you? Seem to recall us being there fighting the whole fucking time, my grandparents included? And you're right, there isn't a specific one for Australia, there's one for ALL the Commonwealth forces
2
at least we had good old days to reminisce about
2
@David Siitherism you, sir, have issues
1
@David Siitherism no you have the "you need professional help" kind of issues
1
@David Siitherism and in Brocton, that's where it fucking is you judgemental British-hating twat
1
@David Siitherism just because you can't find or see something doesn't mean it doesn't exist, and you referring to something as BEING a 'fact' doesn't automatically mean it is one, sorry if this is inconvenient to your twisted world-view
1
@David Siitherism can't have spent very long looking it up can you: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brocton,_Staffordshire

1
@David Siitherism you also directly stated you had an "issue with the British" and have done nothing but complain ABOUT the British during this conversation so yeah, British-hating, not exactly much of a leap
1
@macnutz4206 agreed but we were never 'kicked out of Asia', just initially driven back as far as India (which is still Asia) by a combination of surprise attacks, poor preparedness, weak-willed commanders, lack of heavy weapons or armour to start with and almost complete Japanese air superiority. As the war went on that began to change, by the end the combined British, American and, yes Commonwealth forces including Australia, along with Indian and Nationalist Chinese forces as well as myriad local resistance fighters had succeeded in driving the Japanese off the Asian mainland almost completely and taking back virtually everything that had been lost
1
@David Siitherism when precisely did Australia get 'invaded' exactly?
1
@David Siitherism seriously, when? Darwin suffered a couple of air-raids yes, pretty nasty ones as I recall but what invasion?
1
@David Siitherism Papua New Guinea is not Australia, sorry but it just isn't is it no matter what flag flies over it, Germany managed to take the Channel Islands, doesn't mean we count that as an actual invasion of Britain does it
1
@macnutz4206 fair enough but we DID send whatever we could to them in the circumstances which WAS more than just a few planes, and we at least agree they were never outright abandoned then
1
@David Siitherism I dunno, why don't you ask someone from one of those places if THEY consider themselves Australian, all I know is that the AUSTRALIAN MAINLAND CONTINENTAL LANDMASS was never invaded and only attacked by planes and naval bombardment
1
@David Siitherism admit it, you were caught out by that nonsense you said earlier and have only gone off on this tangent because you know damn well I'm right
1
@macnutz4206 cool, I love them too and yeah the 'Beau' really was a magnificent design wasn't it, very under-talked about
1
@David Siitherism oh so because it's attached to the same continental shelf and has the same plants, animals and used to have the same tribes on it in the distant past that automatically makes it the same fucking place? Ohhhkay pack it up France, Germany, Spain and the rest of the independent nations of Europe, guess none of our individual countries exist anymore because we all share plants, animals and people with common ancestry and didn't drift far enough apart when the Earth was formed. To re-use one of the examples you just gave that's the same fucking bullshit Argentina uses to try to stake their claim TO the damn Falklands
1
@macnutz4206 oooh absolutely haha, seems to be some dispute over whether they really nicknamed them 'whispering death' but they certainly hated and feared them alright
1
@macnutz4206 as did the allies for THEIRS in all fairness, they had damn good planes too and to begin with gave the Western powers quite a scare; and what main single-seat fighter did the British have in any numbers in South-East Asia to fend off their Zero's and Nakajima's? Second-hand Brewster Buffalo's lol. Is it really any surprise we weren't in a position to send much to help out Australia for a bit haha
1
@macnutz4206 well at least we were aware of the limitations of those Buffalos pretty early on and when the first actually competitive British fighters started arriving on the scene such as the Seafire (the navalised Spitfire) it was another matter there too. And yep the later American fighters were things of beauty, no question, and absolutely lethal in the right hands. As for the Japanese I doubt it would've helped them much by that point in the war, but if the Germans had been able to send them jet and rocket engines it would certainly have been interesting seeing Japanese jets trying to fend off B-29's
1
@David Siitherism just because one Australian says that that's the general feeling doesn't mean it is, and even if it IS the case you all feel that way that still doesn't actually make it factual
1
@David Siitherism oh I'M the troll here 🙄
1
@David Siitherism well as for China today the government here IS trying to deal with them and make them slow down with the territory-grabbing, trying to persuade them to become more moderate- while at the same time not jeopardising all those nice lucrative trade deals of course, especially with Brexit approaching. Notice I do not use approving terminology in regards to this, as far as I'm concerned there's only one way to deal with Communist China in a way they'd truly understand or respect, but since that'd undoubtedly lead to WW3 it's probably a good thing it's not up to me
1
@David Siitherism as for the East Timor conflict we WERE there, just not in substantial force as it was a UN peacekeeping mission we were just contributing to, and Australia was in a far better position to help geographically than us
1
@David Siitherism https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999_East_Timorese_crisis
1
@David Siitherism assuming you're talking about the same conflict there that I am
1
@macnutz4206 agreed, but well if the top brass had listened to Frank Whittle we'd have had jet fighters in time for the damn Battle Of Britain. As it IS our first jet aircraft flew as early as 1941, second only to the Germans, and our Gloster Meteor (when the damn cannon arnament was working as advertised) was a good solid plane, not as fast or manueverable as the 262 but more durable and with far better engines. As for the Buffalo, well I pity those that had to use them against Zeros too but you do your best with what you have
1
@macnutz4206 and well my respects to your uncles then. My own grandfather was RAF during that war and my father was post-war, and is a military family in general so can definitely relate 🙂
1
Timothy Dexter you are just individually, Britain's bigger than Idaho by itself and various other european countries are just as big if not bigger than the others. And even combined into the full 50 never mind just 13, oh yeah, RUSSIA is part of Europe. Try looking at a globe or atlas sometime

@johnsmith-vy7pw One man's good old days are another's nightmare evidently
