Nick Zhu armors, by which I assume you mean armour isn't of much use there, it's too heavy and the terrain too soft, the Falkland Islands are 90% ice-cold piles of rock surrounded by miles upon miles of boggy, peaty mud with a thin crust of harder soil, grass and heather to make you THINK it's harder ground. Why d'you think we didn't send any of our own heavy tanks like the Chieftain down there

Even with an Excocet you've still got to get within range first and that's a bit more tricky with Harriers, Rapier SAM's and radar installations set up and ready, watching and waiting for you to do just that

  16. pescod96 you have your point of view on the military and our country's politics and we have ours, but no we didn't sell most of 'em, still got lots of Eurofighter Typhoons and Panavia Tornados along with plenty of transport aircraft and assorted helicopters, and we've pretty much built TWO carriers, Prince Of Wales is well on the way; what we HAVE sold off and frankly we shouldn't have just yet is the remainder of our Harrier jump-jets, old but still very capable and versatile little fighters, there's a reason many countries still have them in service and we'd never have won the Falklands War without them. Thing is they'd have made a perfect stop-gap for these new carriers till we have enough of the F35b Lightning fighters we're buying for them from the Americans, which we are getting just excruciatingly SLOWLY, we won't even have ONE fully operational carrier squadron for at least a year, probably three

ARIEL Manuel Alvarez three warships, a couple of support ships and a civilian cargo vessel out of a fleet of over 50 ships including two huge aircraft carriers is not really that impressive and after we'd gotten the air defences for them more sorted out it wasn't nearly as easy was it.   31. mickeybill well that's just it, day-to-day no they're NOT, the modern British military uses modern vehicles, they're just mothballed in storage, they're kept there, not in use but still in working order just in case they're ever needed and it saves taking this old stuff the entire 8000 miles home just to be sold or scrapped once it gets there

However given the amount of defensive firepower emplaced there now is greater than some small countries have in their entire militaries and how much the Argentines have let things go in terms of their own military since the war, they'd be pretty stupid to try anything

And since we already HAD a prior claim, and since they abandoned all their South American colonies, we re-aqcuired them for ourselves; and if you disagree with the legitimacy of that fair enough but, if so how come Argentina isn't part of Spain still too, if Spain are still truly the rightful owners of their former colonies?

(Oh and as Anglican Protestants we CERTAINLY don't recognize the authority of the Pope saying anything at all on the matter lol)

Frankly the Spanish probably claimed they won a certain battle with us a few years earlier in 1588, during that little fracas with their Armada, and that therefore Britain ITSELF belongs to them by 'right of conquest'. Yeah good luck with that. Regardless of who first discovered the land, they were officially claimed as our territory in 1765 (and UNofficially in 1690, and on neither occasion was there any Spaniards already there at the time and certainly no Argentines), and our claim is the one recognised by the United Nations under international law, and the people who actually LIVE there and whose ancestors have for generations want to stay British, and as long as they do that's how those islands ARE staying. Now if you have a problem with all that, or indeed the Spanish do, fair enough, feel free to take it up with the UN, or indeed even try taking it up with the Falklanders themselves instead (and the over 1000 professional heavily-armed soldiers, sailors and airmen protecting them 24/7), but if it's the latter I'd do so politely, calmly and unarmed if I were you

FalcoGer that and unlike previously-given up overseas colonies and possessions it's not just a relic of the old empire but genuine sovereign British territory and rightfully so despite what the Argentines say.   68. rowsdower you should in all seriousness, is a beautiful place, if you wanna see the more rural, REAL England that's definitely the place to go, the rolling fields, hills and moors stretch out as far as the eye can see and every village and town has lovely old buildings like stone-built churches and real castles

Gaius Julius Caesar there are about 2000 British people living there along with some workers from Chile, and a shitload of sheep and penguins of course, but if you want the 'real' reason besides national pride and protecting the rights and freedoms of those people there's large oil reserves under them

Karl P never been there myself but from what I've read, seen and heard from others that have, mostly sheep-herding and shearing, tourism and hospitality stuff, fishing, and now to a limited extent running oil rigs. They also used to do a lot of shipwreck-breaking and salvaging and selling stuff washed up on the beaches but there's not very much of that these days

Karl P it's more like 2-3000 plus some workers from Chile, and yeah it's enough for such a small population I'd have thought, and yup but if they don't have one I assume it's all either used fresh by themselves or kept frozen. There's also the F.I.D.F., Falkland Islands Defence Force, that a lot of the locals are either active or reserve members of, partly out of fears about renewed Argentine aggression but also because it gives younger Islanders something to do, they get bored too I'm sure
