Sepecat Jaguar, Blackburn Buccaneer or English Electric Lightning next? :)

Figmo 42 not if it's only used as the low-level strike aircraft it was always meant to be and supported by dedicated fighters it's not, just get some Typhoons watching out for enemy fighters and make sure the enemy doesn't know you're coming so won't have SAM's waiting and you're good to go, I don't think it should be taken out of service until something genuinely better at doing the same thing comes along in enough numbers- i.e. the F35, and they are NOT gonna be turning up fast
4
elias winters yes it can be, comes in a variety of flavours remember, they'll simply use a different version of F35, the A or B most likely instead of the V/STOL-only C
3
Graeme Hogg well we didn't, our stupid government tried to save money as usual by using this for both purposes and considering how as he says it wasn't designed for that I feel it did pretty damn well at holding that ground till the Eurofighter Typhoon came along
3
Big Cahoona well on the well-known hub of fair and balanced discussions and respect for other's point of view that is a YouTube comments section that's actually a great rarity so thanks 😂
2
Stian that 'thicc azz' lol, comes with the territory :p
2
Sargeant Cookie more like Tornado > Hurricane
2
Sargeant Cookie nah think more fighter-bomber, like, ironically enough the original Typhoon or Tempest
2
da ve Swordfish trump everything lol
2
Lars Isaac I see you share my taste in books haha and fair enough, well as a Brit and proud of it I'm always gonna prefer the Spitfire myself, and in later variants they did become more versatile, but I certainly see where you're coming from. For me though the Hurricane or (original) Typhoon were the true Tornadoes of the day, able to hold their own in a dogfight AND eat tanks for breakfast
2
Lars Isaac well yes, as long as it's good-natured and without prejudice a little national bias is a GOOD thing, there's nothing wrong with being proud of your particular country's aircraft
2
Josh Jwillway in air-to-air? Sure. Air-to-ground? No freaking way, you have SEEN how much this thing can carry and how fast it can get it there and get out again right?
2
GC82 agreed :)
2
FrancisJoa the British were definitely there too in the latter two, I know guys that served in both. As for the Iran-Iraq war it's called specifically that for a reason
2
FrancisJoa and if that was the only purpose of the Tornado do you really think we'd still have it in service TODAY?! If that was the only thing the RAF wanted a bomber for and was still considered a valid need we'd still have the Avro Vulcan in service instead
2
FrancisJoa and ALSO the ability to do other stuff besides that, I never said you were wrong about that, my point is that was never it's sole purpose unlike the V-bombers before it
2
United Brony depends who saw who first and what weapons they were carrying, and at what altitude. In a conventional dogfight, Tomcat but If it got the chance the Tornado would go low and fast, hugging the terrain to break radar locks and to this day there's still nothing that can catch one when it's doing that, then it'd probably call in a dedicated fighter to actually fight if it was an option while getting out of there itself, the Tornado CAN fight air-to-air but it's not really what it's meant to be doing; the Typhoon it would call in though would be another story
2
Logi Cat yeah but better
2
Kieran Williams true enough, wish it wasn't but sadly yes
2
GC82 again, agreed :)
2
Termitreter erm, F22? F16?
2
watdeneuk yeah but it was never really designed AS an interceptor was it, it's like complaining about the Messerschmitt Me262's performance as a bomber, and as for price show me an aircraft that'll give you the same firepower, performance and reliability (when used how it was intended to be) for less cost
2
Patrick Milewski which is why when people start talking shit about Britain designing it's new aircraft carriers solely around a completely unproven aircraft and complain about how slowly we're getting them, I don't even have to say anything, all I have to do is hold up a picture in each hand- one of a Harrier jump-jet and one of a big dollar-sign on top of a pile of scrap metal
1
Patrick Milewski either's a good choice. Something to consider though is where you got that information on the F35 from as there's a lot of bullshit about it online at the moment, for one thing we DON'T KNOW what the purchase and maintenance costs will be for sure yet, that information hasn't yet been released to the public and it'll vary according to model anyway
1
Patrick Milewski true enough- and neither has the Grippen
1
Patrick Milewski the Tornado however is a tried and trusted weapon, used in multiple different conflicts against a wide variety of enemies, we KNOW it can do what it's supposed to be able to so I don't think governments should be so hasty in getting rid of them
1
Big Cahoona well without an upgrade program like with the Challenger 2 tank or SA80 rifle, sure, with one though I feel it could be modernised
1
Lars Isaac eh? Apart from fighting each other and both being fighters what've they got in common?
1
Drew Hickford well they're certainly both highly versatile twin-engined fighter-bombers :) yeah I'd go with that (although there is a severe lack of wood involved in the former lol)
1
Drew Hickford jealousy intensifies haha
1
FrancisJoa having the capacity of doing something doesn't make it it's sole purpose, if the Russians wanted to stop any conventional aircraft getting through their defenses they could regardless of altitude and the designers knew that, it had the ability to do that in the long term yes but it was intended in the short term to act as a general-purpose strike aircraft with some air-to-air capabilities to boot in order to get out of trouble. And that's not a very clear way of saying that, maybe just use actual words next time like we're doing now :)
1
FrancisJoa the primary method of getting a nuclear weapon to Russia from the UK was then and still is submarine-launched missiles, Trident specifically
1
Daniel Beard agree with all you say and the Typhoon is the best all-round fighter in the world for me right now, but that's just it, it's the Spitfire or Messerschmitt of the 21st century, it's a dogfighter, born to rule the skies, what it's NOT is a low-level strike aircraft and yet until the F35 comes along in sufficient numbers that's what they're going to force them to do if there's another Afghanistan-like conflict, after the Tornado goes out of service and before the F35's can fill in the gap, and that will not be a good time for anyone involved
1
Osmosis doesn't mean it's something completely new that the west has no way of matching though
1
Osmosis well I didn't mean 'match' as in we have an aircraft that is a direct equivalent, I meant 'match' as in something that can confront it successfully in combat on equal terms or better, and plenty of American and NATO aircraft can fly really fast at a variety of altitudes while firing BVR missiles
1
Joshua Ngau Ajang just stick a couple of drop tanks on it, no problem
1
Figmo 42 well just like Matsimus is considering buying a Leopard 1 tank when the Canadians get rid of them, if I suddenly become even marginally rich you can bet I'll be saving one of these from the scrapheap
1
Richard Hoffmann exactly, they had fairly modern ground-to-air defences and those planes were flying VERY low, I doubt other aircraft could've done the same missions the same way without losses
1
maximusoptimus2000 probably because Saab had a practical monopoly on the Swedish air force, already had stuff like the Gripen on the drawing board and didn't want to risk losing it if the rest of Scandinavia adopted foriegn aircraft
