Two regiment's worth, with maybe a third if the older Challenger 2's in reserve "mothballs" were activated too in an emergency, 250 tanks tops, with only around 148 of them Challenger 3's. Not as many as I'd like but it's a hell of a lot better than no tanks at all, and of course that's 148 of arguably the best Western MBT in the world, thing's gonna be an absolute BEAST (strongest armour, best gun, newest ammo, most advanced up-to-date systems) and backed up by THOUSANDS of Abrams, Leclerc's and Leopards in almost every possible conflict involving them, little thing called Nato haha. Plus at the end of the day it's not as if Britain's in much danger of a land-invasion being a bloody island is it haha, so it makes sense to send the majority of the money to the Navy and RAF instead, but while still keeping at least SOME tanks for contribution to overseas conflicts

It definitely can accommodate a 130mm, as was already shown by that Rheinmetall tech-demonstrator, but that requires an autoloader and so a completely different turret layout inside, it's a hell of a lot more expensive and complicated to implement in other words so, knowing our government it's never gonna happen for those reasons alone

@tyler_bt3326 true, although if Britain still wants to be able to defend or even retake it's still-considerable number of overseas territories and colonies elsewhere in the world, alá the Falklands War, or indeed to make a worthwhile contribution to a coalition force going IN to somewhere else like in Iraq or Afghanistan, then we definitely will still need an army capable of BOTH, of doing all that while still being able to defend the home islands at the same time- if something like any of those overseas conflicts happens again, it won't matter how good our planes or ships are if we don't have sufficient ground forces available to send with the taskforce, and that's WITHOUT leaving Britain itself defenceless. Think we've now reached the limit of downscaling we can do and still keep that capability, there's no more fat left to trim haha; I just hope the government realises that

@casematecardinal what do you consider best then? 'coz the Challenger 2 has the strongest toughest tank armour in the world, bar none (surely kinda proved by that incident in Iraq with seventy separate RPG hits at point-blank range and a Milan ATGM thrown in for good measure), and is not as slow and unmaneuverable as most people seem to think it is considering the weight, has excellent cross-country performance in particular; and as for the gun, that "two-piece firing garbage" has the longest range recorded tank-on-tank kill in HISTORY

that speed figure of 60mph was probably a typo or fruedian slip, it's far more likely that, with the new upgraded 1,600bhp engine, she'll do around 40 on roads and 20-30 off-road; still pretty damn quick for 70+ tons of Main Battle Tank. As for the Hesh round nah that had definitely had it's day in the anti-armour role, and there'll be a high-explosive round this new gun can fire for anti-infantry or anti-building work or dealing with lighter-skinned vehicles that should be just as good for dealing with those threats

@casematecardinal as for the two respective incidents, one with 70 rpg's and one where it was 14 RPG's and a Milan ATGM (thought that was all one incident rather than two separate ones, I stand corrected), both those incidents definitely happened, in Basra in 2006, with the Challenger 2 coming through it all with flying colours. @v4skunk739 well the gun IS the same as on the Leopard 2A7, but yeah the turret is still unique to the "Chally" series, all-new too though and specially built around the new gun, new ammo storage and new optics, just with an outwardly-similar overall shape and layout to the previous Challenger's turrets (and apparently also built to be adaptable for fitting to other tank hulls, although I've no idea if that's ever really gonna be happening and definitely have my doubts about other countries wanting to invest in such a thing rather than just buying or building whole new tanks)

My only major worry with this whole Challenger 3 thing to be honest (besides the ever-present fear of some kind of budget-cuts to the project by the penny-pinchers of course), is the amount of time it's gonna be before these things are actually rolling off the production line, 6 or 7 years I hear, and on whether we're actually gonna HAVE any working tanks to send anywhere should something come up in the meantime, given all the older CR2's that aren't getting the upgrade will be taken out of active service. Guess we can send the demonstrator models haha?

@TheFreshman321 no it's just obsolete in it's current form and needs work, just like the Challenger, the basic platform is perfectly sound. With updated armour and gun and ammo and optics and so on it'd be as good as any of it's rivals

@casematecardinal they USED TO have those advantages, the Challenger 3 will change all that with it's new engine, just as it will the rifled to smoothbore problem- I never actually claimed the tank didn't need improvements or upgrades. And the Chally was always still fast and powerful ENOUGH regardless anyway, last time I checked it wasn't a race lol, Challenger tanks of both versions got where they needed to go, when they needed to get there, and did what they needed to do and got their crews home alive every single time, for over 40 years and through both Gulf Wars, there's not many other modern main battle tanks that can say that (tanks that have seen genuine combat that is, including against IED's, ATGM's and other tanks). To men who are alive to tell the tale now thanks to that amazing Dorchester armour, it's definitely the best tank in the world and always has been- plus of course it can make tea, as an added bonus 😁

@casematecardinal oh and as for the "any other tank could have got that range-kill" thing, I dispute that, mainly because most other (first-world) country's tanks might be just as technically proficient but don't have the crews to back it up- we do. British tank crews might be relatively few in number but those few are trained as highly as it gets, they're true professionals at it and among the very best tankers the world has to offer, let's just say I very much doubt we'll be seeing the Chinese or Russians doing the same anytime soon lol. Plus there's been plenty of other wars involving tanks before and after that one, all over the world, never heard of another tank-on-tank kill over the same distance or greater by anyone else though- the fact is a Challenger scored a perfect kill shot from 2.9 miles away in 1991 and that's yet to ever be beaten, and that was with "mere" two-piece ammunition
