We need this in Britain for the QE class carriers, especially AEW or in-flight refueling versions, ditch some of the conventional helicopters for these, bigger, faster, better range and altitude

@Chuck_Hooks Hopefully so, hell if anything with our much bigger made-for-purpose carriers with bigger decks and hangars we're arguably more ready for them THAN the Japanese are. Biggest problem's gonna be money though, these things ain't exactly cheap. Could always wait for the inevitable Chinese knock-off and buy THAT I guess lol

@Chuck_Hooks true and hopefully so 🙂 but it's always better to still have at least some of the same capabilities entirely on your own, just in case like in the Falklands there's no allies to help (directly in the field I mean)

@richardjbarlow there already IS an in-flight refueling model in the works like the others here said, we still have Chinooks and Merlins anyway for heavy lifting, and as for AEW just put the same Crowsnest stuff from the Merlin in it. As for the F35 how much more often is their maximum stealth capabilities gonna be required than just dropping bombs on something d'you reckon

@richardjbarlow for refueling many aircraft at a time they either, y'know, LAND and do it the old-fashioned way or much bigger proper land-based tanker aircraft like KC-130's are used, something like this on the other hand may only be able to refuel a couple of F35's at a time and just extend their range and payload a bit but that's ALL THAT WOULD BE NEEDED. And unlike those land-based planes it's a refueling capability that goes wherever the ship does, and sure it's not a cheapo option and I never said it was, FOR that reason we probably indeed WON'T be buying them sadly, doesn't mean we shouldn't be though

@richardjbarlow we have enough escorts either ready to go or on the drawing board already, so long as we don't suddenly scrap or sell off half of them after some stupid defence review anyway, we only HAVE two carriers to escort after all. The main big problem, as every QE-class hater out there points out again and again, with our new carriers and their F35's is actual combat range, payload and the duration they can stay IN combat, thanks to the ski-ramp and VTOL approach we've taken; that and yes the actual number of jets each can carry of course, but that's never gonna be as many as the Americans no matter what. And, as I say the present number of actual F35's is enough for going on with and can be kept if some of the conventional helicopters are switched out, only a couple of Ospreys for each ship will be needed anyway, we don't need vast numbers of these things

@richardjbarlow hey I never said we should suddenly stop building frigates and destroyers just because we should have a few Ospreys too did I. As for the Falklands losses the defences on our modern warships, especially stuff like Type 45's are much, much stronger now, those were hard lessons but they needed to be learned and they HAVE been

@Chuck_Hooks and yep, at the end of the day they might be American-made aircraft but everything else involved (aside from those US Marines actually on board of course) is 100% British, including the pilots and aircrew, the most important part of all- and that's how it should be

@Chuck_Hooks true 🙂 although American jets flying off British carriers is actually nothing new anyway. Is strange to think but if we'd still had HMS Ark Royal, our last full-sized fleet carrier, and her F4 Phantoms in 1982, the Falklands War might've taken a lot less time and far fewer British lives, if it had happened at all. She was only laid off and scrapped by yet another penny-pinching government a couple of years before
