@danielm.595 and NORMALLY I'd be scared for a moment but then remember "oh hang on, we have tanks too" lol, and take cover while calling in the cavalry. And at least in the American's case they CAN still rely on that steel cavalry, as can we- for now 🙄

@tomp329 agreed and kinda important to have tanks too, when all your biggest potential enemies still have THOUSANDS of the damn things and have no intention of giving THEIRS up anytime soon

I honestly think if they genuinely plan on doing that we should have a 'peaceful protest' they might actually listen to- steal about a squadron's worth of those Challenger 2's before they can, drive them right up to the Houses Of Parliament and aim the main guns loaded with HESH right at the front f*cking door

Yes it does because the Dorchester armour on those Challenger tanks, especially the most recent 'Megatron' TES variant, can stop anything the Russians or Chinese can throw at it and at the same time the new smoothbore Rheinmettal gun the Chally'll be getting will cut through any tank of THEIRS like a hot knife through butter (although if they have the only tank that actually SHOWS UP thanks to this stupidity it's another matter of course). Obsolete my arse, it's just a bunch of penny-pinching politicians and bureaucrats trying to save money through what's really just a false economy, and not giving any f*cks whatsoever about the real soldiers on the ground

As for active protection systems they look cool but they're still pretty untested, and are not always gonna be enough no matter what, so when they're not trust me you want heavy armour too as a fall-back option. Something tells me the crew of that Challenger 2 that withstood 70 RPG's and an ATGM in Iraq would agree

Is fair enough with the Warrior though I suppose, that IS pretty obsolete at this point I think everyone will agree (although just like the Challenger it CAN be upgraded and modernised), although either way I don't think they should be gotten rid of altogether without a proper modern replacement

This false-economy "oh tanks are obsolete and we don't need them in the modern world" nonsense was stupid in the 50's and 60's, it was DEFINITELY stupid in the 70's, 80's and 90's and now? With China and Russia breathing down our necks and still having THOUSANDS of bloody tanks they'll have NO intention of getting rid of? We're at APOCALYPTIC levels of stupid

@SonsOfLorgar damn right, much more heavy EVERYTHING in fact, that's the beauty of the modern Main Battle Tank at it's best; the perfect balance of not only the strongest protection and firepower, but also of good mobility and adaptability at the same time

@davidhouseman4328 a few hundred of what will be, when sufficiently upgraded the BEST TANKS IN THE WORLD with some of the best-trained and most experienced crews into the bargain, and while obviously it'd be better having more, ANY amount of tanks is better than none in my opinion. Besides national pride DOES still matter as does, more importantly self-sufficiency, don't know about you but I don't like the idea of having to rely on other countries for armoured support or indeed for ANYTHING militarily

@davidhouseman4328 no reason our tanks can't get into the fight as is, we've plenty of ships and planes capable of transporting them; and while I certainly agree those would be great assets to have too alright, in addition TO our tanks, hell the Boxer IS being considered as a Warrior replacement I believe, I just don't feel they'd be a viable replacement FOR said tanks. I believe main battle tanks will always be needed and always have a role on the battlefield

@davidhouseman4328 if it's such a crisis that more are needed than those our current fleet of aircraft can carry and those that are stationed in other parts of the world already, then that's when we call NATO my friend, the OTHER reason besides the above that we don't actually NEED thousands of tanks or thousands of ships and planes to bring them? We have lots of allies who already DO, think two hundred or so Chally's is more than enough if they're backed up by two THOUSAND Abrams lol, not to mention Leopards, Merkavas, LeClerc's, Arietes, Type 90's and so on and so forth to back THOSE up. And if for some reason our allies can't or won't help directly, then (A) see this is why we nevertheless still need our OWN damn tanks and (B) well in that case you make the best of whatever you DO have and fight a delaying action, say with lots of well dug-in infantry with anti-tank weapons instead, until such time as more Challengers DO eventually arrive by sea as THAT'S still our main method of transporting them en masse

@91plm 9 times out of 10 we're going to be the ones WITH air superiority my friend and even if we're not there's going to be such a collosal air-battle going on overhead that any enemy aircraft are going to be more concerned with SURVIVING than destroying our bloody tanks. As for Urban Warfare while that may be a problem for some OTHER main battle tanks the Challenger 2 has kinda proved in Iraq it hasn't much to worry about there lol, 70 RPG's and an ATGM, all at one tank at nearly point-blank range, and all it did was knock off a track and wound the driver, and even THAT was only because back then they hadn't added the extra Dorchester armour to the front lower plate yet, that they now HAVE in the Theatre Entry Standard upgrades

@91plm oh and as for weight forget 60, all told with all it's add-ons and latest armour upgrades all fitted the Challenger 2 weighs nearly SEVENTY-FIVE tons lol 😂 BUT will still do at least 30mph easy, over pretty much any terrain, nearly 40 on-road. These things have sturdy suspension, grippy tracks and a LOT of horsepower
