S oades oh I wouldn't go there or we might have to bring up Germany's own colonial history which isn't exactly squeaky-clean either, true they didn't rule as many countries and lands as us in the past but trust me if they could've replaced us as the dominant empire of the world in the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries they'd have done it without a second THOUGHT with all the negative aspects firmly attached, just under the claws of a figurative German eagle rather than those of a British lion. And that's without even going into what happened in World War One that CAUSED those savage reperations that, yes, in part caused in turn what happened next but there was kinda some big f*cking reasons for them- first air raid on civilians, first to attack civilian shipping with U-boats, first to use chemical warfare in combat, and invading neutral countries including Belgium- which was in fact the sole reason Britain became involved in that war in the first place. Just because the actions of the Nazi's overshadowed everything else Germany did before them doesn't mean this stuff didn't happen any more than the bad parts of our OWN history outweigh the far greater number of GOOD things that the British brought to the world

S oades that's solely because the thousand-bomber raids, once they got properly underway with heavy four-engined British Lancaster, Halifax and Stirling bombers were far more effective than any of the attacks made by the twin-engined medium bombers of Goering's vaunted Luftwaffe, especially when combined with daylight raids by American B-17's at the same time, and while yes they unavoidably (given the crude bombsights and unguided weapons they were using) killed civilians too it was the factories, docks and workshops producing Germany's war machine they were actually trying to destroy, and they succeeded in doing so. As for that first raid on Berlin that was only a response to a supposedly 'accidental' attack by a flight of Heinkels on one of OUR cities before that, so cry me a damn river

S oades because at the time it was simply seen as an effective weapon of war by all sides and not yet a banned one. What you seem to be missing here is I'm not trying to demonise Germans OR trying to make out the British were perfect angels, I'm simply trying to make all the anti-British people out there who seem so eager to make us into arrogant, stuck-up, pompous baby-killing enslavers so they can chop history into nice, simple black-and-white good-and-evil blocks to wake up and smell their own hypocrisy, the Germans IN OUR PLACE, doing the SAME THINGS by making THE SAME DECISIONS through history (as they very easily could've) would have, and to some extent or other DID do the EXACT SAME THINGS WE DID and in some cases FAR, FAR WORSE

S oades I'm NOT white-washing it OR saying you're wrong about everything, we WERE the biggest slavers of them all but the important thing is we REALISED that and stopped doing so BEFORE anyone else did, and at the end of the day you don't conquer and successfully rule a quarter of the Earth's surface for two centuries by always being nice and polite about it, despite the stereotype. I'm just saying I'm not the one who needs to stop twisting history to suit their own arguments here and see that just because the way other people see those events doesn't always match YOUR point of view or that of your country doesn't automatically make them the ones in the wrong

S oades oh and don't give me that about the Lusitania, it was still a damn passenger liner full of innocent people that was torpedoed by a German U-boat it never even saw let alone stood a fair chance against, at a time it was believed by the general public civilian ships were not to be considered valid targets, whether the German navy had been given orders to the contrary or not and whether that ship was secretly carrying very non-civilian cargo or not

S oades you see I couldn't agree more over that, this really isn't a black-and-white good guys-vs-bad guys thing here. If I could find a way to go back in a time machine and stop the bad things my country did over the centuries I would, even if it wasn't in my country's best interest TO stop it; however I can't and even if I could, and this is the other side of the coin here, I wouldn't include those bombing raids in that as while they killed thousands they also helped go a long way toward destroying the Nazi war-machine- meaning the war came to an end quicker, the camps were liberated sooner and God knows how many more didn't die in them as a result

S oades all those countries just like before World War One beforehand had alliances and treaties of protection meaning if one was invaded other countries would have to go to war as a result or betray their allies, Poland with Britain and France included, Hitler knew that but invaded anyway and here we are. Teh Weh yeah but what YOU need to understand is that I'm not the one that needs educating here, it might seem 'simplistic' or 'backward' or something but I KNOW I'm right about what I'm saying, IN the way I'm saying it. Yes, the British aren't perfect angels, yes, the British did some terrible things over the years and yes, the bad parts of our history shouldn't be ignored, covered up or overshadowed; but the GOOD parts ALSO should be remembered and celebrated because there's a hell of a lot more of them whatever anyone on here chooses to beleive and one of them was the bombs dropped by, among many others the Halifax a good friend of mine once flew in as a tail-gunner; yes, one here or there might have hit a school or nursery or hospital, and many more hit ordinary people's homes. But still MORE of them hit the factories and assembly plants producing some of the most deadly weapons the world has ever seen placed in or around those same cities and worked in by the people that lived there, or burned up their fuel supply or broke the damns giving them power, or hit the docks and submarine pens that provided a safe haven to the sleek 'grey wolves' of the Atlantic who were so effective at nearly starving us into surrender. Those bombs were not dropped to murder civilians they were dropped to shorten the war and break the Nazi's ability to sustain it, and they did just that, making up a large part of why you can freely hate or judge us OR like us and agree with us from your nice 21st-century Germany without a picture of a man with a tiny moustache glaring at you from the wall

S oades no, I CAN have it both ways thankyou very bloody much because I'm my own unique human being and choose to do so, with or without your say-so. As far as I'm concerned everything that was done by Royal Air Force Bomber Command during that war was simple military action taken against one of the most evil regimes ever created and undertaken in an honourable and completely justifiable way. Regardless of what their orders were and regardless of what the government felt about their killing civilians the men crewing those bombers were family men, they had mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, wives and girlfriends, children, they were no more evil than you or me whether you choose to paint them in that light or not. They were there to do a job and they saw it through, to break the back of Hitler's ability to make war, and many of them died performing that duty to fighters and AA fire but they kept calm and carried on. If you went up to one of these veterans in sight of me and said to them what you've been inferring to me if I didn't punch you right in the damn face they would

As for whether something done 2 or 3 hundred years ago is of credit to us today shouldn't that also go for BAD things we did, or other countries for that matter? You gonna judge modern Spaniards or Portuguese or white AMERICANS for that matter for what they did to the Native American tribes? I'VE not changed my mind about jack shit because I WASN'T THERE, if I can't celebrate positive things beyond the present or future than the same surely goes for negative ones
