Zachary Thomas well in the case of the UK we've pretty much been fighting either equal or stronger opponents (and usually winning) for the last 200 years or so, our empire days are behind us so we mostly fight on the defensive these days unless helping our allies out as part of a coalition; 1982 proved we can still swing with the biggest of them if push comes to shove though :) the exception to the mostly-defensive thing though is, was and always will be our special forces who can pretty much do anything or kill anything, anywhere, full stop. If those buggers are doing their jobs right the rest of the world doesn't know about it till everything's already over and done with

nicholas martin tell that to Leonidas. And, for that matter, to the RAF during the Battle Of Britain, the Royal Navy at Trafalgar or the British Army at Rorke's Drift
2
nicholas martin and what would this massive army do if their weapons stop working or their command structure breaks down or their communications fail. A well-trained, well-equipped, well-disciplined force can almost ALWAYS triumph over a numerically stronger opponent with the right brains behind it
2
nicholas martin if there's more forces at home and they do enough damage before dying, both real and in morale terms then sometimes that's enough by itself

felipezorro depends on the situation though, remember the Germans were given little time to consolidate, re-arm and re-supply, were being attacked on two fronts, were stretched thin fighting three superpowers at once, were rapidly running out of essential supplies especially fuel for tanks and planes and were being bombed continuously day and night, destroying their factories and sapping their will to resist. The Russians had a lot more than simple numbers in their favour there, after all they'd been even more numerous at the start of the war but had been initially losing
2
SpartiuS94 they only had the best equipment toward the end and were only throwing their ever-diminishing resources into developing it to try to stave it off. At the beginning of the war they had plenty of men, machines and supplies, were considered an unbeatable war machine and had initially been winning, even against Russia with it's comparatively VAST numbers of, at the time, inferior-equipped troops, yet which soon started to turn things around on the Germans with better tanks, guns, planes and ships, and more importantly better leadership as they gradually recovered from Stalin's purges. Numbers help but they don't mean anything by themselves
2
Sangwoo it wasn't as clean-cut as that to begin with though was it, at the start of Operation Barbarossa everything seemed to be going the German's way despite the Russians always having had the greater numbers. Other factors are more important is the main point here

Darth Nihilus so have the SAS though and fighting Rommel in the desert before the US were even involved

Anna don't know if he ever replied but I'd say yeah, we would've because we won the Battle Of Britain without their help anyway and still had the largest and most powerful navy in the world, and while the bulk of the supplies we were given did come from America we still got plenty from our commonwealth especially Canada, India, South Africa and Australia; we would never have won the war by ourselves though but hey neither would anyone else, we'd just have been able to stop the Germans winning it EITHER and fought them to a draw
2
Anna nothing would've stopped Hitler attacking the Soviet Union anyway, he considered them his primary enemy and would happily have sued for peace with us after Dunkirk if he could've so he could focus entirely on the Russians, and while I doubt they'd ever have entirely beaten the Russians they'd certainly have had an easier time of it with Britain out of the war, America not in it yet and mostly focussed on Japan anyway, and the rest of Europe either neutral or conquered
2
Alex Sp you kidding? Chuck Norris would've defeated the Taliban WITHOUT EVEN BEING THERE
2
Kenny Ken erm, no, that's kinda not how it worked back then as you guys (I assume you're Indian yourself) were still PART of the British Empire at the time. Also if the Germans and, more specifically the Japanese had been able to join up by defeating us IN India they'd have been able to provide a much stronger united front and been a lot HARDER to defeat given, for one thing the Americans would've had to deal with Japanese jet fighters and Tiger tanks... it was therefore kinda important for India to stay in the fight as the buffer between them and she did, UNDER BRITISH COMMAND. If she'd had Independence back then like she does now India would most likely have become neutral and stopped fighting

nicholas martin I dunno buddy, you know what they say about cutting the head off the snake...

einar yeah well modern ANTI-tank weapons have much the same technology so not so sure about that?
