  1. Both the original Sonic and Mario game franchises were REALLY GOOD in the 2D era, they just got lost in a sea of samey 3D games that proved more annoying than fun. Sonic in the early 90's WAS cooler, he just ended up getting lost in the '3D revolution' where Mario, largely thanks to a more permanent and widespread fanbase (and greater funding behind the scenes) has somehow clung on- it's not because the games have ever been that much better.
