David McConville it was a different time with different countries run by different people. Nobody ever said Britain or it's Empire were perfect champions of light, freedom or democracy. They certainly helped introduce the ideas of them to a lot of the world though, along with most of the inventions allowing those ideas to develop and the free speech to discuss doing so in the first place

Кира Терещенко you do realise Russia used to have an empire with the exact same policies right, one only made bigger and badder with a different face when the Soviets took over? I suppose if you now disagree with this comment and reply to it accordingly though that doesn't count as apologising for imperialism because it's only the British who have ever been guilty of it

rancper the Islamic empires TRIED to bring their version of 'civilisation' to Europe by force on many occasions and nearly succeeded, fortunately they were held off in northern Spain at great cost, if they'd won there would BE no modern Europe and therefore no world as we know it today. Modern English language and mathematics do take influence from Islamic ones it's true but they ALSO have considerable influence from an eclectic mix of Roman, Viking, Anglo-Saxon, French and German sources as well as many other lesser ones, just as the British THEMSELVES as we are today are descended from a mixed bag of other country's influences and races, primarily European of course but also many of them from parts of our former Empire

jay'sup pretty sure I'm sensing some anti-British feeling here...

j0nnyism I dunno, the box magazine and bolt action would definitely have sped up the reloading between volleys
2
Terry Shulky that and the combination of a box magazine with a nice, smooth bolt action and the advent of smokeless powder all made the Lee Enfield series a far more effective overall weapon system, lower individual round stopping-power or not
2
Alfie Nokes that and I'm pretty sure that song wouldn't even be written for about 70 years lol
2
Retardo Mcqueen for most of the world, it definitely, indisputably was. And if it hadn't been us it'd just have been either France, Spain, Portugal, Russia, Japan or even the United States instead
2
jay'sup I suppose no other nation on Earth has ever done those things while conquering other peoples and colonising their lands

Jack the Gestapo sounds fantastic, throw in some salt, vinegar and bread & butter and I'll happily trade houses with you lol

burtlangoustine1 only women, disabled people, kids and the elderly do that here actually, men whiz standin' up pretty much everywhere :)
2
MrChiangching well they DID kill over one thousand of our soldiers, they were invading the Zulu's country at the time of course though, so it could be argued that BOTH had reasons to do just that
2
MrBanausos not necessarily, I'm 33 and my father was in the RAF in the 50's and 60's, and my grandfathers and great grandfathers on both my mother's and father's sides fought in the second and first world wars respectively, with my mother's father going on to fight in Korea as well
1
MrBanausos actually they're dying sooner because of that AND the fact it's a 1984-style humanitarian nightmare of a country, a dystopian neo-Communist hellhole where if you have any political or religious beliefs that clash with those of the party you can be arrested and forced to admit to trumped-up charges in TV show-trials before going to the Chinese equivalent of a Soviet gulag- IF you're lucky, if you're NOT you simply disappear in the middle of the night and the next day your organs appear for sale on the black market. But I digress :)
1
MrBanausos and? Men aren't like women in terms of their reproductive organs no longer working after a certain time, while certainly less common with older males they technically can have children their entire lives so long as their testicals can still produce sperm
1
MrBanausos well he wasn't 30 then but he also certainly wouldn't have to be 'at least 20' to be an officer there, that would be considered quite old for say a luitenant, and aristocratic families would often pay to have their offspring given commissions back then so he probably wouldn't have had to bother with much training in fact
1
NobleKorhedron and a good thing too or I wouldn't be here :)
