Zuzana Bicikova true but he's also right about the older audiences thing, this movie just didn't attract enough younger viewers despite being probably the best naval war movie ever made. Sodding millenials

ethan hatcher what you mean the Sentry Bot from Fallout 4? :P

L. Wolf yeah I love watching that too :)

SonofaGlitch if only the rest of your country was this well educated and level-headed on the subject there'd be far less stupid arguments about all this. Couldn't agree more mate, finally one of you who really gets it

Johnny Thunder historically I agree with you, at the end of the day the 'Jonathans' were no real threat to England whereas Napoleon was looking for any chance to invade, no matter how fleeting and had a massive force ready and waiting to do just that; however in the cinema the French have not really been shown as any great threat to Britain at any time especially at sea, from Nelson to Hood and Drake, Hornblower and Killegrew to Lucky Jack they're never really shown in what public perception there is of the era as being superior to the British, and the British never the underdogs; the French or Spanish navies fighting the Royal Navy would not, as far as modern audiences without any great knowledge of history are concerned provide anywhere near the suspense and controversy that a Britain versus America battle would make for, it's my view that instead of playing it safe they should've went for it and made them American, as whether they'd love or hate it you KNOW that'd get people wanting to see it and made the movie far more money

Well if they DO ever decide to scrap her, even though even us British have no desire to see that happen I suggest we steal her and HMS Victory and have a re-match before they can :P
7
Ernest Spencer Victory may be in dry dock but I bet with new masts and some fresh copper plating underneath she'd be good to go once again, they've kept her pretty damn well-maintained and back in the day they actually used to sail her out on special occasions for the navy
7
Ernest Spencer yep, historic landmarks 'disappearing' due to modern land-development is an all-too-common occurrence even to this day, the battlefield at Waterloo no longer has most of Wellington's ridge line because the Dutch, completely ignoring their frankly hopeless performance during the majority of that battle decided to bulldoze it in order to build a massive and rather vulgar lion statue there instead in honour of the valiant troops from the Netherlands who were of course the REAL reason that battle was won...
5
Ernest Spencer well in all seriousness I'd be shocked if she was, it's bad enough when one of these grand old tall-ships bites the bucket UNEXPECTEDLY like the poor old Cutty Sark Clipper Ship did, let alone when governments decide because they're too expensive to maintain or something that the only solution is getting rid of them altogether

Neither side kicked EITHER'S arse, it was a drawn-out failure for BOTH sides, our efforts mostly failed at sea and yours mostly failed on land, neither of us achieved our war-aims or really, ANYTHING at all except a lot of dead people on both sides, a burnt White House and a lot of embittered and disillusioned Canadians, US settlers and Native Americans; basically it was all just a big prelude to the far more dramatic upheavals in Europe just like 1776 before it- trust me if our geographic positions were reversed you'd forget that war and America altogether pretty quickly too with all that going on

daniel Goodson don't forget to drain some engine oil from your car into a bowl and then waft it around the house, and also make sure no-one living there showers or bathes for a few weeks beforehand lol, THEN you get the proper atmosphere :p

LordVader1094 yeah but the film wasn't a big box office success, and I reckon the controversy from hype of an upcoming modern blockbuster movie pitting the British against the Americans, two of the leading world powers and the main voices of the English-speaking world, especially given how much anger 'The Patriot' before it sparked outside America, would've gotten far more people in seats to see it, made more headlines and social media comment streams, generally gotten more attention; as it is it flew under the radar and in my opinion it's because of the French no longer being considered the major threat they were at the time. To you and me they make historical sense sure, but to the vast majority of the modern, younger movie-going public there simply isn't the suspense there

Dalle Smalhals just Das Boot lol
2
Triblow _ it's only the theatrical version though, director's cut and miniseries versions are considerably longer
2
@MiltonFindley bahaha he should've been there when you were watching it, would've given you some extra immersion (pun intended)

Great stuff, keep up the good work! as a future videos suggestion, and keeping with the theme of naval history how about 'The Battle Of The River Plate'? :)
2
Stoatwarbler Mangrove hmmm, what shall I take my historical education from, an American TV show or EVERY BOOK ON THE SUBJECT EVER WRITTEN
2
condeguga well he, or rather his marshals and generals, very nearly DID and certainly would have if it wasn't for the British and Wellington in particular
2
Alexandru von Carstein Zarovich Kantakouzenos yup unfortunately
1
ProcolHarum1967 yeah but the severity of the punishment was generally up to the judge so that wasn't always the case

Did you know that during the 1982 Falklands War an Argentinian patrol vessel was taken as a prize of war by the Royal Navy? as far as I know that's the last time to date that's happened

Not always, some were but they varied more in quality
