Wake Me Up Inside well it's a British movie made by mostly British cast and crew based around an event involving British people in the majority. If you're expecting no flag-waving at all (a) you're a fucking idiot and (b) why go to see this movie in the first place given the subject matter. If it's a crime to be proud of British history then come and fucking sue me. The Spitfire was and is an amazing aircraft that deserves all the recognition it gets and without which we wouldn't have won the Battle Of Britain, Hurricane or no Hurricane, and we DID win and that SHOULD be all I have to fucking say on the matter

Wizmo there's PLENTY of characters that, instead of talking about their feelings or their wife n' kids back home like in the usual Hollywood bullshit, actually 90% of the time just get on with concentrating on either the task at hand or on simply surviving, expressing what they're feeling through their eyes and expressions where necessary or more often simply through their actions; as for violence frankly my only problem with it was there not being ENOUGH of it thanks to that stupid PG rating. This is not the same kind of war movie as any you'll have seen in recent years and should not be interpreted as such

Hellequin same story here, one of my neighbours who's unfortunately since passed away used to be a rear gunner in one; and he actually did tell me lots of stories from the time but I don't remember much of the details, I was young, easily distracted and didn't pay enough attention

I said 'in the majority' and I meant it, this movie is based around pretty much the entire BRITISH army being evacuated BY THE BRITISH. Yes, the French made up the bulk of the numbers in the crucial rearguard, I'm actually fully aware of it and I have nothing but respect for their efforts, they did go on fighting right through the evacuation and played a crucial role holding the Germans back, couldn't have done it without them; however none of you lot complaining about the French not being shown or talked about enough ever talk about the BRITISH troops fighting right beside them, my own Grandfather's regiment included, or the Belgian and Dutch troops fighting beside THEM, or the fact a good number of the above were evacuated TOO. This was an ALLIED force comprised of the remnants of several different country's armed forces and that's how I've been thinking of and referring to them this whole time in terms of the real history; however in the MOVIE we're supposed to be talking about it's far more narrowed down, and rightfully so as it would otherwise have gone waaaay over-time and over-budget IF it was ever finished at all, unless they resorted to ditching the awesome practical effects and just made the whole thing out of CGI in which case it would've SUCKED. If you want to make a movie about the French troops, MAKE IT, but do it in France with French people otherwise it's just not the same thing

What version of France are you talking about? the Free French, those French forces we evacuated along with our own so they might continue the fight from elsewhere rather than either surrender or die, or the VICHY French, which is what those 'murdered' sailors were at the time you're talking about? they were ON THE SIDE OF THE GERMANS and their ships and equipment were destroyed to prevent them being used AGAINST THE ALLIES. If you want to talk about revisionist history and propaganda how about reading a history book that wasn't written after the war BY THE FRENCH

Also in 1939 you French (I assume that's what you are due to what you're saying) were supposed to be MORE ready for war than us, you had a far larger army and air force and were pushing for it just as much as we were, stop trying to blame your own defeat on your allies

You mean the part of the RAF that we desperately needed to defend our own shores because we knew we'd be next? the part of it you want to send to try to keep an already mostly-lost France in the fight? if we'd sent those planes all they could have done was slow the Germans down A BIT while being gradually whittled down to nothing leaving the channel wide open for Hitler to cross, virtually unopposed thanks to the British army having lost most of it's heavy equipment, the Royal Navy being stretched thin trying to keep the rest of the empire safe and the Home Guard being no real match for the German forces, comedy aside and thanks to the depleted but still very strong Luftwaffe then having total air superiority. And if we went down America would've been next after us

He's PARTLY right and is using what facts he knows about it to back up his own political bias and his distaste for what he sees as British propaganda, he has no interest in real historical facts that don't go along with him in those areas, for example he's simply regarding the French ships being destroyed as the British stabbing the French in the back even though those ships were by then part of the Vichy France regime, a puppet fascist state, and they were only destroyed to prevent them being used against the allies by the Germans, either directly or indirectly through their Vichy puppets

He stopped them to re-arm, re-fuel and re-supply before he DID send them in though, they had after all been fighting non-stop for months and had just defeated and mostly captured three countries, he wasn't exactly stopping them out of the goodness of his heart or because he secretly liked the British or something, this IS Hitler and the Nazis we're talking about here, after all no such impediment was placed on the Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine who never DID stop attacking

Kevin Varney well if it'd just had a ventral gun turret of ANY sort that'd have been an improvement, I know the designers didn't want to have to make the bomb-bay smaller but if they had room to fit in a radar bulge down there they had room for an extra gun

Jerry Glaze well yeah that's pretty much my own point as well mate, although there ARE actual characters in it too which as I say I think we get just enough info about and who have just enough screen-time, a minimalist approach that nonetheless still should make you care about what happens to them; all these Americans can't seem to see them the same way unfortunately

I mostly agree with you but if that HAD been the only thing that 'saved' England there'd have been no Battle Of Britain later the same year, in which we saved OURSELVES, after all he still wanted to invade Britain itself and found he couldn't as he didn't gain air or sea superiority and we'd gotten most of our army back at Dunkirk thanks to his blunder. If we hadn't succeeded at first Dunkirk then the battle for the Atlantic and the B.O.B., and therefore stopped him long before the Americans got involved he'd have certainly taken the British Isles and used it as a giant landing strip to launch long-range bombers against the US next WHILE also being able to concentrate on Russia without having to fight a war on two fronts, something America WOULD have had to do by '41 if we'd gone down

Well yes, I never said they weren't still fighting all along through the events of the movie and they are briefly shown at the start as you say and mentioned throughout, and doubtless had the movie been made in a different way they'd have been actually shown more; my point was simply that the Dunkirk evacuation itself was a primarily British affair as is the movie itself, and is therefore focusing on them for the most part as a result. The French soldiers however were certainly heroes by any measure of the word and definitely do deserve proper recognition and, as I say are perfectly worthy of a separate movie showing their fight in it's own right, albeit one that should at least give a nod like the one this movie gave to the fact not all the British troops DID just drop their weapons and head for the beach but instead stayed to carry on the fight in the British's own rearguard beside their French allies; they unfortunately would pay a heavy price for this defiance, look up the plight of the second battalion of the Royal Worcestershire regiment (my Grandfather fortunately was in the third not the second) for an example

The entire second battalion of the Royal Worcestershire regiment bled right alongside them pal, bet you never heard about that part, but I did because my own grandfather was actually THERE in 1940, although fortunately in the third battalion not the second- which got massacred by the SS when they eventually tried to surrender after they became cut off and had run out of ammo. Something tells me that part wasn't in whatever pro-French anti-British nonsense you've been reading

Erm, what crying would this be exactly? and Hitler and Stalin started it when they basically slaughtered Poland between them. This is a definite, verified historical fact. Britain and France just reacted to it and did the best they could as they saw it in a difficult situation as events unfolded from there. Any other point of view on this is biased political revisionist bullshit

Actually all but two or three of his generals and field-marshals were advising him to stop and re-supply, especially those of the 'old guard', it was just a few of the new blood, the chief proponents of the new lightning war way of doing things that wanted to keep going; otherwise though you're absolutely right

I was simply trying to defend the British's part in the historical legacy it's based on, after all they're the easiest major participant in that war to bash in the eyes of arrogant, strutting Americans and Russians and French and Germans trying to blame anyone else for their defeats but themselves. The MOVIE I've actually barely talked about but it's great in my own opinion and definitely best seen in cinemas

DDelete013 the 'serious viewers' though aren't all fully AWARE of that grand history. The British were in the thick of the fighting somewhere in the world virtually from THE DAY WAR WAS DECLARED in 1939, look up The Battle Of The River Plate sometime; every battle they fought in had something about it to boast about, whether it ended in victory or defeat, look at Singapore where the humanitarian decision was taken to go against orders and surrender to the Japanese to prevent huge, pointless bloodshed and loss of life, in the unfortunately mistaken belief they would be humanely treated; or El Alamein, where after a series of crushing defeats at the hands of The Desert Fox the British finally got their act together and pretty much destroyed Rommel's entire force ALONG with the remnants of the Italian army in one collosal desert tank battle. These are just EXAMPLES. That whole proud military legacy is hardly talked about in America or Russia due to their obsession with talking only about themselves or about situations that directly involved them, despite the fact while they were certainly the largest countries involved and the 'big players' they would never have had a chance of 'winning' the war without Great Britain's involvement, and I feel it therefore needs to be talked about not out of bias or propaganda but simply so as not to be forgotten by younger generations looking back and seeing only Hollywood glitz

I wonder though, would it be possible to raise one of the more relatively-intact wrecks of one from the bottom of the sea, alá "Raise The Titanic", and restore her to something suitable for display? Yeah I know they're war-graves but the bodies could simply be re-buried with full honours, and this way it saves both ships and crews from the damn grave-robbers, especially the ones in the South China Sea
