Hongi Hika (1772-1828) travelled to England in 1820. Hongi worked with academics at Cambridge University to create the first Māori dictionary. Hongi met with King George IV who gifted Hongi chain-mail armour, jewels and trinkets. With the armour the only exception, Hongi sold all of George's gifts for over 100 muskets in Sydney on the journey home. Hongi knew George's trinkets were of little value in Māori society. Hongi also knew that he had to sell the trinkets to Europeans in Sydney who held the look of shattered glass in high regard.

@Kiwi-LSA Without Hongi Hika, Te Reo would have died out like other indigenous languages.
