  1. Kupe created a map of Aotearoa centuries before Dutchman Abel Tasman sailed around parts of what he renamed New Zeeland. He never landed and never asked the resident Māori what the actual name was. It's a good thing Aotearoa and New Zealand are both official names for the country.
