  1. People are chasing a dream when they think they can extract hydrogen and oxygen from water, simply because there isn't any hydrogen and oxygen in water. The artifical leaf is a good example. One side of a leaf contains cobalt/phosphorous/oxygen and the other side contains molybdenum/nickel and zinc. The light that shines on the cobalt side creates a potential difference and accelerates the ability of the water to break down those materials to then release the hydrogen and oxygen they contain. Nothing is obtained from the water.
