@geraldhewing2076 They can use their passports and enter the country through the usual means. On the BBC article (Plan for lifetime ban....) it states:- The home secretary - who will introduce the new laws - told the "the only route to the UK will be a safe and legal route". The Home Office says there are a number of these routes to the UK. However, some are only available to people from specific countries, such as Afghanistan and Ukraine, or for British National status holders in Hong Kong. The information is there. Ukrainians can even arrive in the UK from a flight without a Visa and claim asylum. How safe is that??? Remember many refugees don't have any documentation so cannot travel by these methods. There's nothing illegal about people crossing the Channel in dinghies to land on UK shores and claim asylum!!!

People from Afganistan have a safe route to the UK to claim asylum. I guess if the Brits didn't enter Afghanistan in the first place we wouldn't have Afghan refugees now!!!

@davidmcculloch8490 As far as I am concerned the 'safe' route is available. Whether it is working or not is a matter of perception because I don't have access to all the information to make an informed decision. Guess that's why people like the OP thinks the UK has given up on Afghan refugees when in fact there appears to be a safe route available for Afghans. Trouble in this society is that no politician or member of the Home Office will tell the general public what exactly that 'safe' route is. There's so much misinformation surrounding 'asylum' and 'immigration' in the UK it's no wonder the general public make such a fuss about it. But imo, if Britain had not occupied Afghanistan the UK wouldn't be seeing Afghan refugees today. Price of meddling in other country's affairs I'm afraid!!!

@davidmcculloch8490 I'm uninterested in Braverman - it stands to reason if Brits never went into Afghanistan, we woudn't have afghans coming to uk as refugees placing a burden on society! So because the brits were in afghanistan occupying it, let afghans come to UK in their droves.............let them come by whatever means they can!!

@dawnmoriarty9347 I only referenced an article stating the existence of safe routes but the artuicle doesn't explicitly state what those safe routes are. So how you seem to know there's only 24 people who come across using those safe routes I'll never know? But because you do know how did those 24 people come across? Did they get a flight straight from Kabul to London? Or did they stop off at EU and cross the channel on a ferry? I'd love to know where u got your information from!

According to Home Office quarterly immigration statistics, between September 2021 and September 2022: 1,391 people came through a refugee resettlement scheme. 4,786 people came through refugee family reunion rules. 72,027 asylum applications were submitted. 15,987 asylum seekers were given permission to stay (rising to 17,658 after appeal). But in addition to the above, significant numbers of people have come through the bespoke visa routes for people from Hong Kong with British National (Overseas) status (144,576 visas granted between 31 January 2021 – 30 September 2022), and the two Ukraine Schemes (186,893 visas issued since March 2022). And as at 24 November 2022, 12,300 people had been granted indefinite leave to remain under the two schemes for Afghan nationals.

@davidmcculloch8490 I thnk the problem is that it could well be the numbers of people wanting to come to UK to seek refuge - there could well be hundreds of thousands of people wanting to seek refuge in UK!

Afghans have a safe route to claim asylum in the UK along with Hong Kongers. In other words, these people don't have to cross the Channel!!!

I bin any political guff that comes through my door. The Tories blame Labour and Labour blame Tories, it's a never ending cycle of the 'responsible' blaming others for their mistakes. Tory and Labour are as bad as each other!!!
