As a pedestrian I welcome this news. Cars are always jumping lights, speeding, taking wrong turnings etc, if people drove slower then they might pay more attention to what's around them!!

@nothingtoseehere999 the highway code has changed giving pedestrians priority on the road because they are vulnerable as they have no protection. Reducing speed limits in highly built up areas makes sense and is inline with the highway code changes. Additionally a lot of cars are EV and weigh heavily. A pedestrian would have no chance if they're hit by a 1 ton car travelling at 30mph but stand a better chance if the car's speed was lower! I think any reasonable person should put safety first and so 20 mph speed limits is reasonable!

@nothingtoseehere999 i understand your point of view but a driver is in charge of a machine that can kill, the pedestrian isn't! being a motorist one has to drive sensibly and be aware of dangers on the road including people!! you make a good point regarding the responsibility pedestrians have but what do you think, would it be easier to get every pedestrian to take a road awareness course or just put up speed limit signs on roads??
