It is not just the production of energy that counts, but also the mining, refining and other chemical processing to make the product and at the end of its life there is disposal/recycling. In that sense, solar is not as clean as people think is it. The time you own it to produce energy is obviously not the time the pollution happens...duh.
And its not just the panel as you need batteries, power regulators, both with limited lifespans. When it is all totaled, its dirty. There are many ideas and technologies in the works to make some of these issues go away, but until one materializes, its a solution looking for a problem.
Conventional energy relies mostly on low-tech highly available resources and a very optimized process.
This really cannot be said with a straight face about the state of current alternatives that need rare metals from other parts of the earth.
As for saving money, well in the USA fuel is dirt cheap compared to Europe, you will never save a Tesla car worth in fuel. Any saving you will see is due to others subsidizing you at the point of a gun.
