Nonsense, earning a thousand more per month is an insane amount given they did not had much before. And do you think money grows on trees? This is money taken from others to begin with, you cannot expect to live extremely comfortable on other peoples work effort. It's already a disaster that a relatively small group of connected people does this upon society. Applying it to a much larger group would be devastating to a degree no automation can compensate.

Governments create poverty by taxing work into oblivion. And by policies that keep all prices high. All UBI does is grow government (read unproductive people). Which results into a country getting poorer and a negative cycle gets started!

You are assuming the working poor, but the poorest in the West are just plain poor and they make zero hours! Whatever financial help they get goes to luxury to make them feel better for a while.

Then you are a criminal! You find it OK to reduce the leisure time of working people, to give another group more money and leisure time. With inefficiency of government in the mix, reducing overal wealth, freedom and leisure time (you will have to do whatever they dictate to keep the "benefit"). UBI is a shortcut to a totalitarian state where criminals run the show and violence it the norm.

@halincandenza27 You honestly believe every poor person works or even CAN work?

@ps.2 The poverty is something government created by taxing more and more and then give certain groups some compensations. In a way we already have an UBI light and it has proven to be a total disaster. It destroys large sections of society even in light form. I will never want to see a full/universal version.

It's not weird at all that giving money to poor people makes them poorer, given a setting with an abundance of goods to buy. This is just basic human psychology that every student knows (or at least should know if their education was proper). Free money has psychologically LESS value and this means it gets spend easier on frivolous things. As we are comfort creatures, sudden excess income a poor person has, goes to luxury to make them feel better. It does not get saved, nor invested, but just consumed. The new level of comfort becomes the new normal. After a while, to feel comfort again, they have to spend even more. Also loss hit us harder than gains. New goods bought, break down eventually or if in a bad neighborhood it gets stolen. Which touched upon another factor often overlooked: crime breeds poverty...and more crime. Because it is pointless to try and build something up if it only gets stolen. That includes the government taxing us all into the ground so the ultra rich can tap into that money stream.
