How efficient is it really? First the loss in the wind/solar device. Then the heating of the block. Then MOVING the block to where it is used. Then the 40% of turning it back to electricity. And depending on the use, there are several more layers of energy loss. It sounds better to me to just use it as a battery on side of generation, acting as a buffer. Not having to deal with transporting back/forth, batteries. How well does it compete in that with other battery tech?

@jonathanodude6660 In a way we do pay for it. Loss means more installations are needed, making the harvesting of energy more costly. We would not use solar panels that have super low efficiency for example, it just would not work economically and the space used would be insane.

@jonathanodude6660 Cost, including maintenance are always underestimated and underreported. It needs to be substantially better cost wise to replace proven existing reliable tech.

@jonathanodude6660 Costs over lifetime, not just construction costs. Many projects have failed during their first years of operating. In Europe with sky high artificial energy prices, that is less likely to happen. But that should be viewed as subsidies, not market pricing. As for CO2 reduction having a benefit, that is very dubious even while politicians are all in on that. Same with carbon credits, totally artificial as a result of policies. No person is actually wanting to pay for that. In short, solar/wind energy in Europe is a political artifact, heavily subsidized in various ways.

@macmcleod1188 True, hence my question how it compares to alternatives for this use.

@benjamindees It is explicitly stated in the video, did you watch it?
