  2.  @stephenpmurphy591  Not really. "Fashion" means buying and showing things that are "on trend". What trend? That depends on your ideology. And yet of course there is a "profit motive". Nobody is moved without responding to some incentive framework. Most "refined" clothing is rooted in military uniforms and exploration. That's the evolution of its purpose and functionality. Things got whacky because kooky socialist theories and the industrial revolution happened almost within lockstep. It used to be that only the richest of the rich could indulge in frivolous purchases. The game has changed because society as a whole produces a lot of stuff and you have this entire "middle" class (neither "super rich" nor poor) that can make discretionary purchases. These discretionary purchases all involve...something. Decadent people want to show their decadence. That part has been true for all of human history. Being "on trend" is a "virtue" just because that is what is propagated. Human nature hasn't really changed at all.
