  1. Rick has the preamp gain too high for you to hear the difference in the chord fingering. Most "overdrive" from that era came from the power tubes rather than preamp overdrive and as a result the "distortion" sound is highly controllable with pick/stroke intensity variation and palm muting and so forth. It's also really difficult to "model" that sound and you really need a vacuum tube power "amp" section to get it right. And you have to turn it up very high, like you're actually using the it in a concert. Also, I love Deep Purple's Smoke On the Water, like all true guitar players. But Highway Star is twice as good, at least. I love playing that song, over and over.
