The ones that coined the term (alluding to alluding to Roman dictatorships) actually looked at the US Democratic Party as the most successful modern variant in the "democratic age". And FDR sent his "Brain Trusts" to talk to Mussolini for execution of his New Deal. If not for FDR's affinity for Stalin we (the USA) probably would not have gotten involved in the war in Europe.
