  3.  @thomasnyberg4229  The mineral development deal is way better than joining NATO. First, Russia IMO is afraid that Ukraine will align itself with CCP development and economic colonialism. That's what leftists in small countries all want. They want protection from the Communist Vanguard Party. Putin knows that. The CCP has no friends. If suddenly the US is taking up development rights this is a much better deal for Putin than he could have imagined. He maintains the status quo with the CCP and can play reasonable after getting what he needed. He needs protection from the only regime in the world that actually seeks to destroy Russian sovereignty. OTOH, leftists all around the world are rooting for Ukraine because they're rooting for the CCP.
