If people used factual, accurate, scientific terminology then this might never have happened at all. Instead the government allowed ideology to influence public policy and law, including on something as important as our identification. So let's get this clear. Sex refers to biology. It's not an 'identity', but a physical state relevant to identification. In humans there are two sexes - female and male. A person who has a medical condition where their sex is genuinely ambiguous might have an argument for putting an 'x' on their ID. But this population is so miniscule - a minority of a minority - that that would have to be done on a case by case basis as a special exception, with medical evidence to back it up. 'Gender' on the other hand is a purely ideological concept. Putting an 'x' on an ID on the basis that a person thinks they have a 'nonbinary gender identity', or putting an 'F' on the ID of a male because he 'identifies' as a woman is not acceptable because 'gender' is not a valid identifier. It's an inneffible, unscientific, personal, ideological feeling or belief, based in highly problematic sex stereotypes, roles and expectations. That's not what identification cards, birth certificates and other documents are about. They're about objective, observable, demonstrable facts about you, not your personal feelings, beliefs or ideologies. I don't have an 'f' on my ID card because I 'identify as a woman'. I have an 'f' because I'm female, and that's relevant when identifying me, for statistics and for recording accurate public information, records and knowledge. Let's get back to reality before the waters are muddied any further by disengenuous, hypocritical activists and ideologues who repeatedly claim that sex and 'gender' are not the same - except when it suits them.
