This is true! No matter your opinion on the guy, you have to imagine the concept of reaching a land you and few others knew truly existed. You set out under the notion that you may just sail forever until everyone dies in a storm, starves, or dies of disease. Knowing this, you and your crew decide to do it anyway. And you actually find land. Sure people are already there, but contemplate discovering a new piece of land (today) that no one was even sure existed yet. That's kinda huge.

@larryo6874 I can accept someone thinking it was smaller than it actually was. That makes sense if you haven't mapped the whole world and you aren't familiar with geometric math. But it's wholly stupid to think it's flat.
