@RCN2820 That is largely a result of the development of the high-bypass turbofan.

@simonm1447 Swings and roundabouts. Drag is lower for wing mounted engines and the Nimrod (a variant of the Comet airliner) used RR Spey engines (a low bypass turbofan). Successful airliners such as the 727, DC9, BAC111, Trident and VC10 all used podded engines located at the rear of the aircraft, rather than under the wings. It was the high bypass turbofan which ultimately killed off both design variants (at least for larger, long range aircraft) due to their increased weight and physical dimensions.
