@snaxx82 Just as the rest of the world is about to move on from a physical standard kilogram.

I can't help wondering if Hostile Fire Indicators might be adapted to give early warning of incoming drones? Also, why is the UK still effing around with Ajax when this vehicle is available?

There should be an age limit on comments. No one under the age of 5.

About the same, neither will end up in production.

It all comes down to power sources and friction. Can you generate (or store) the energy densities you need to make a rail gun work in the real world? Can you find a way of isolating the round from the barrel such that you don't rip the barrel a new bore every time you fire it? Don't think of it as a wonder weapon, it isn't. Think of it as an evolution from hazardous, unstable chemical to electric (but faster)

Why use a less efficient chemical system to accelerate from zero instead of a more efficient electrical system?

@daveb5041 Also, I am not sure what would happen if you fired a propellant charge into the back of an energised railgun. Combustion of propellant produces a large quantity of ionised (electrically conducting) gas which would be filling the space between the the two power rails!

@daveb5041 The point behind the sabot is where the armature sits, that is where the drive is generated.

@1IbramGaunt Don't get me wrong I would love to see the Tempest fly, I just doubt we will ever build another fighter on our own.

@kaana8421 So it runs into the shrapnel at Mach 3 instead of Mach 1, same end result.

@kaana8421 If a missile is too fast for a gun to react then it is down to one of two factors, detection range or multiple threats. In the former case it does not matter what you are defending the ship with, gun or missile, you will not be able to react quickly enough to target it. If you detect the missile(s) at sufficient range a gun can be brought to bear and the speed of the missile is irrelevant (it is flying towards the gun). The faster the missile however, the harder it is to switch between multiple targets. This is where independently targeted AMM's win out. The problem is when bean counters become involved and see the CIWS as "Good enough" to do the job on their own. Against one or maybe a couple of missiles it might be, against a coordinated multiple attack? No chance.

Where did you get your thumbnail pic? Not a good advert as they have the flag upside down.

We may be in the modern age yes, but at the cost of a decent AEW or airborne refuelling capability.

Except that the troops moaned about the SLR because it was semi-automatic. Troops love to moan :)

No need to watch the video, far more entertaining reading the Russian propaganda trolls.

@wouterdebois7958 You could not be more wrong. The likelihood of an explosion from propellant vs a capacitor bank is so much greater. If you don't believe me, I give you HMS Hood.

I will lay you odds that a straw poll of the British public would show that they would be unable to identify an L85. Maybe the younger generation would, thanks to games, but not the rest.

Best wishes. Youtube is fast becoming the thought police.

Damn guys, does nobody study history anymore? The RN had Sea Slug and it's replacement Sea Dart for long range surface to air applications. Sea slug was useless at low level, Sea Dart somewhat better but not optimal. For low level they had Sea Cat and its replacement Sea Wolf. Sea Wolf was only available on the Type 23, despite it being offered in quad form as a direct Sea Cat replacement. Bloody bean counters! The RN has never operated Sea Sparrow.

Absolutely, Its why all these "Green energy" projects fail, we just don't have the means of storing energy at anything like the power density we need to make them work.

If certain reports are to be believed the real fault with these ships is lack of bandwidth, criminal if true. If you are going to pay a fortune for a ship, pay a slightly larger fortune for one that works properly.

Short term I suspect the main use of lasers will be to dazzle. You cannot put reflective coatings on an IR sensor window.

@drinkme6803 "They have it if Israel is going to give it to them AFTER stealing it from the U.S." I highlight this comment so you can read it again. Bit of a problem with tense?

@drinkme6803 Past, present and future. How can China HAVE a railgun if Israel is going to GIVE it to them AFTER stealing it from the US?

Excellent video.
