It all comes down to power sources and friction. Can you generate (or store) the energy densities you need to make a rail gun work in the real world? Can you find a way of isolating the round from the barrel such that you don't rip the barrel a new bore every time you fire it? Don't think of it as a wonder weapon, it isn't. Think of it as an evolution from hazardous, unstable chemical to electric (but faster)

Why use a less efficient chemical system to accelerate from zero instead of a more efficient electrical system?

@daveb5041 Also, I am not sure what would happen if you fired a propellant charge into the back of an energised railgun. Combustion of propellant produces a large quantity of ionised (electrically conducting) gas which would be filling the space between the the two power rails!

@daveb5041 The point behind the sabot is where the armature sits, that is where the drive is generated.

@wouterdebois7958 You could not be more wrong. The likelihood of an explosion from propellant vs a capacitor bank is so much greater. If you don't believe me, I give you HMS Hood.

Absolutely, Its why all these "Green energy" projects fail, we just don't have the means of storing energy at anything like the power density we need to make them work.

@drinkme6803 "They have it if Israel is going to give it to them AFTER stealing it from the U.S." I highlight this comment so you can read it again. Bit of a problem with tense?

@drinkme6803 Past, present and future. How can China HAVE a railgun if Israel is going to GIVE it to them AFTER stealing it from the US?

Guys, just go back to school!
